Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice regarding a GTR witness statement receipt I received.
Here's the situation: I was caught by an inspector at London Blackfriars station. I was traveling from Charlton to London Blackfriars, but I only had a ticket from London Bridge to London Blackfriars. At first, I tried to argue that I couldn't tap in at the gate and a staff member let me through, but eventually, I admitted that I had actually traveled from Charlton without the proper ticket.

The inspector took down my personal information and had me fill out a form, which I remember was related to having an invalid ticket. I was then issued a GTR witness statement receipt with a reference number in the format GRTEMG000XXXXXX. The receipt states:

"GTR will contact you in writing regarding the facts reported today and may pursue prosecution. All correspondence with GTR regarding this matter must be in writing to:

GTR prosecutions department
Eastside offices
Kings Cross railway station"

At the end, it also says, "This is not a penalty fare. GTR will write to you in due course."

I'm feeling really regretful and worried about this. I've been traveling this way for the past week, sometimes using return tickets and sometimes single ones. I read on this forum that GTR might look at past travel history, and I'm worried that they could decide to prosecute me given my repeated offenses. Has anyone been in a similar situation, or does anyone have advice on what to expect next? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum

Someone will be along with answers to your specific questions soon, but for the moment you might want to go back into your account and reduce the level of detail you've given for 'location': just at the moment we can all see the address that you've given, and that may not be something you want to tell the whole internet.

Have a look at some other thameslink GRR threads to get an idea of what to expect and what to do.

Welcome to the forum!

We see lots of cases like this on here. What happens next is GTR will write to you in the next few weeks asking for your version of events before they decide how to proceed. I suggest a short concise reply mentioning:

- That you are sorry for what has happened
- What you have learned from the incident
- That you are keen to settle the matter without the need for court action
- Offer to pay the outstanding fare and the train company's administrative costs in dealing with the matter

While we cannot guarantee it, GTR are usually prepared to offer an out of court settlement to people who co-operate with their investigation and who haven't come to their attention before. Expect to have to pay the cost of the fares avoided at the full Anytime rate, with no credit given for the invalid tickets you did purchase. In adition you will need to pay an admin fee, typically around £150. While you aren't required to incriminate yourself in your reply to GTR be aware that they will audit your onine ticket purchasing history and if this reveals frequent short ticketing has taken place they will probably want to factor in the cost of these journeys into the settlement figure.

If you are offered a settlement you wil need to be in a position toi pay it in full within a few days of it being offered. Payment in installments isn't allowed.

When it arrives, post a copy of GTR's letter in this thread along with your draft reply and forum members will proof read it for you. Do redact any personal details and case reference numbers before uploading.

Thank you for the heads-up! I’ve gone ahead and adjusted my location details.

Thank you for your response. I have reviewed several Thameslink GRR cases, but I remain anxious and concerned about the possibility of prosecution. That’s exactly why I decided to share my case here on the forum—I’m hoping to find some guidance from others who have been through similar situations.
