Received a travel irregularity email

Hi long story short received a travel irregularity from Greater Anglia

I discovered this forum through Reddit prior to replying (which after reading a few threads to know I should’ve just ignored)

I have previously short-faired but I’m now on the ball and will make sure I don’t do this again.

However, I’ve replied and basically said what is this and what do you want?

I won’t be responding to further emails but a bit worried I’ve set myself up by replying in the first place.

At this point, all you can do is wait to see what Greater Anglia come back to you with.

It's not impossible that their response will be an offer of settlement, and you'll decide it's worth paying that to make the matter go away.

But in any other circumstance, our suggestion would be to get back to us before making any response to Greater Anglia, and we may be able to suggest the least damaging way forward.

To also add - I’ve not been caught in person and also have not had any penalty fares in over two/three years (which I would’ve squared up there and then)

A Train Operator will only go to court if they believe they have sufficient evidence to prove that you have short fared. In our experience this means either being stopped at the station or on train and evidence gathered or an admission on your part.

If they do not have such proof (and their belief is founded on a data trawl) then they can either write to you (and you can either admit or not / ignore) or they could issue civil proceedings where the burden of proof is lower.

As far as I am aware we haven't seen civil proceedings taken out based purely on a data trawl with no admission from the person whose account it was.

From the cases we see on this forum, some people caught purely on a data trawl (but have acknowledged on this forum to short faring or a similar not paying the correct fare) decide to settle because of a: their conscience b: the stress and anxiety of potentially facing some form of proceedings.

As others have stated you now have to wait and see what GA do next.

Fortunately, I’ve always had a railcard so that’s nothing to worry about!

However the instance they used as an example was from over 5 weeks ago.

Coming on here to update as I feel you never really see any updates from the travel irregularities but I’ve just continued to ignore and haven’t heard a thing since mid December

Possibly early days yet, but you are doing the right thing in ignoring the matter.

This is really helpful, thank you. More updates would be super helpful too even if you hear nothing further
