I should be able to claim back expenses on a standard class ticket but I need a receipt. If I pay for a standard class ticket could I ask for an upgrade to 1st at the station counter and keep my original receipt?

Yes, you are entitled to a receipt for any money that you pay over. In my ticket office days there were APTIS credit card sized black receipt tickets - now when I ask for a receipt I get a scruffy old bit of paper from the machine!

Cool, is it possible to get a 1st upgrade on a monthly ticket and only pay the difference?

Not sure about that, it's 10 years since my ticket office days and an awful lot seems to have changed, as I have elarnt since joining the forum!

I'm sure someone will be along shortly who can tell you though!

Seems to depend on the TOC. With Southern you get a receipt printed on standard orange ticket stock.

If I go to Guildford to buy a monthly travelcard Z1-5 could I get a standard and then upgrade to a 1st?

You can 'excess' the ticket for a single/return journey, you pay the difference between the appropriate standard and first class fares. You MUST do this BEFORE boarding the train. If you board the train and travel in the first class section of the train without having bought the excess, you will be charged a full priced first class ticket (unless a penalty fare scheme rules otherwise), atleast that is how the FRPP reads.
