So a quite odd thing happened at MKC last night, I was wondering as to the reason?

Arrived MKC at 2304ish with the 2308 LNR to Euston showing "delayed" and the 2345 showing "cancelled". Looking at various online sites it appeared the 2308 was cancelled from Birmingham to Northampton but then reinstated there.

What then happened was that the 2345 was cancelled at Northampton, and the unit operated the 2308 very late instead, giving Apsley and Kings Langley stops but Tring not.

I'm a bit confused why this would be done. Was it perhaps that the driver was booked to work the 2308 and refused to "do overtime" to work the 2345, but they could swap the units around to make it his original booked train (albeit nearly an hour late) and thus make him do it, or he asked for such a workaround so he could do it without being seen as strike breaking? Or would there be another reason?

This was very messily shown on the PIS, and the effect of it was that out of the 5 ish intending passengers at MKC, 3 gave up and took a taxi. The few Avanti staff around couldn't work out what was going on either, it took Realtime Trains, Traksy *and* Railboard for me to work it out :)

Potentially due to crew with the split of LNWR and WMT operations at Northampton… linked to IA no doubt.
