Reading Station Escalators

When the escalators aren't working at Reading, or have been stopped, if I remember rightly they display a 'No Entry' sign on the digital display.
If I'm correct, I wonder if passengers could have their claim for injury rejected on the basis they ignored a warning sign?

It's not very large though, nor does it carry any text - merely a rather pixelated version of a No Entry sign. I'm not sure that'd hold much sway?

I've also seen them closed off by an extensible band pulled across the ends of them.

There is a safety requirement for escalators to be working in the up direction but not in the opposite so technically no one should be 'climbing' them.

A quick question here: Why is that? I would have thought it would be more likely that people have accidents walking down stopped escalators as opposed to walking up them?

As to the other point: I tend to use escalators on the left, i.e. the walking side, in order to save time rather than effort - in both up and down directions. It is only on those occasions when I run out of puff that I stand and let them do the work for me...

Given the 100% compliance with the signs telling passengers not to take pushchairs or large items of luggage on the escalator this should never occur!

This morning a problem with the escalators at the North entrance "necessitated" closure of the whole entrance, with everyone being told to use the other entrance. Heaven forbid people having to use their legs!

Luckily for me my train was late so I still made it.

Oh, and the P14/15 escalator which was closed after the incident in January is open again, as of a couple of months ago (!)
