When travelling between Reading and London I noticed some weird behaviour: Zone 1 capping means Zone 1 travel beyond commute is free.
Let me explain:
- I travel in off-peak before 6:30 from Reading changing at Paddington and exiting at Elizabeth in Zone 1.
- I do the same on way back (after 19:00).
Now, this leads to a charge of £16.8x2=£32.6.
The off-peak cap, which doesn't even apply (because the morning journey is part of peak cap IIUC), is higher.
Regardless, Zone 1 cap is reached: i.e. adding a zone 1-zone 1 tube journey keeps the fare at £32.60.
This is nice, but from a previous thread I posted it is (near?) impossible to figure this out without trying it. Should TfL attempt to be more transparent? It's probably more because it's complicated than that they don't want to I guess.
