I have been to the long-closed Reading Goods down the branch and thought that mighjt have been RGP buy it's a new station!

Correct - just south of the junction, served by Reading-Basingstoke trains. There's a big new office development there.

There were also plans to build a new station on the line at Chineham, on the outskirts of Basingstoke, but adding two extra stops in the R-B trains would mean that the journey would take more than half an hour, requiring extra units to maintain a 30 min service.
