Sorry for the extreme post length!
TL;DR - What ticket to buy for Reading-Carlisle via S&C one way and direct back, and how busy?

What we'd like to do is the following: Reading to Carlisle, via the S&C to Carlisle, ideally avoiding London but not if the time penalty is huge. Return directly, so Virgin to Wolverhampton then XC to Reading. Out Friday 26th August (daytime), back Sunday 28th or Monday 29th.

Now, there are no "Any Permitted" fares for this flow, only "+LONDON" and the insultingly restrictive "BANBURY STAFFORD". In any case, rather oddly (IMO) there is no routeing involving map MM for Reading-Carlisle, except for the LONDON routeings which do not include Paddington, so the S&C is not a permitted route from Reading anyway. Thus it is not possible to do what I was hoping and go Reading-Leeds via Birmingham, then S&C (except by using a London-Scotland ticket, which would additionally require a Derby-Sheffield ticket to bridge the missing section of Cross Country Route in map AS). We must therefore go via London if we want to go via Leeds + S&C, unless an alternative origin/destination can be found.

The best ticket option then looks like the SVR Reading-Carlisle route:+London £109.10. Restriction 5F. This would presumably be valid on the BANBURY STAFFORD routeing as well (as is more expensive than the alternative routeing).

Now, questions:

- Any better suggestions?

- Are we likely to encounter problems using a RDG-CAR "Route:London" ticket on Birmingham-Reading?

- We're likely to get the 1449 from Leeds (arrives Carlisle 1728) - how busy is this likely to be on the Friday? Can we get reservations? Is it mostly Pacers on the S&C?

- I was thinking it would be nice to stop in Leeds for lunch (having never been there before), however this ticket doesn't allow BoJ on the outbound. So, would we be likely to have any problem at Leeds, and is there anywhere nice around or in the station anyway?

(It'll be 2 adults 1 child with F&F railcard; I've given fares as the undiscounted adult fare for simplicity)

You can't get reservations on the S&C line trains. I'd be suprised if this one was packed but expect it to be reasonably busy (S&C line trains usually are). And possibly busier than normal just before the bank holiday weekend.

FWIW, the Settle and Carlisle line is currently worked by Northern 158s. They aren't reservable, but if you're getting on at Leeds you shouldn't have a problem.

It'll quieten down quite a bit at Keighley and Skipton too.

A Guildford - Carlisle "Any Permitted" is valid via Birmingham & the S&C and is only a few pounds more than the Reading Ticket

Great, thanks. My suggestion of taking the scenic route might not go down so well if it was a Pacer - not used to such contraptions down here!

Well spotted – I did try a few surrounding places but not Guildford! It’s strange that there are so many more permitted routes from Guildford than Reading. Unfortunately it is also a 5F restriction, which would mean starting short at Reading would not be allowed (apart from by combining tickets ;)). There isn’t a reference for cross-country journeys in 5F, suggesting the ticket is unrestricted on XC (not that we’re likely to go before 0530 or even 0930, whichever would be the appropriate time).

Via London is looking favourite at the moment as it gives more flexibility – we could return either via Banbury or London (possibly meeting friends in London on the return), and avoids excessive use of XC.

No reservations, but just make sure you are at the platform 10 minutes beforehand. You'll also have to contend with early evening commuters going up as far as Skipton.

As there are barriers at Leeds before the main concourse, tell them that you are going to visit one of the shops or having a cigarette. Not breaking your journey as you haven't left the station. There is a Burger King, McDonalds and a Wetherspoons on the station, although there are quite a few different restaurants just across the road in City Square area. Depends what you like.

If you like beer to go with your food I'd reccommend Mr Foley's, which is on The Headrow. There is also a Timothy Taylor's pub on the same road a couple of doors down that also does food. About 10 minute walk from the station (check on Google maps before you go).

If you're willing to leave after 0930, then a £112.40 Off-Peak Return Reading - Appleby route Not London may meet your needs. It is valid via Leeds or Carlisle, permits break of either or both legs of the journey, and takes Restriction 2V.

Validity Code 2V

Monday to Friday only – no travel restrictions on any other days
Outward and Return Journeys
By any train except those scheduled to depart before 09:30

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/pdfs/SVR_2V.pdf

But this ticket gives an earliest arrival at Leeds of 1349, not leaving much time for a leisurely lunch before the 1449 to Carlisle.

I was thinking if this could be done with 2 tickets - Reading - Manchester & Manchester - Carlisle via Leeds.
Alternatively: Reading - Leeds, Leeds - Carlisle, but it does mean coming back over the S&C or via Clapham (N.Yorks) [Pacer country].

Thanks for the suggestions all- I'll discuss whether to avoid London or not with Mrs Lexy and then get some tickets booked tonight.

Definitely a fan of the odd pint of foaming nut-brown ale, so might check out those suggestions. Would need to be baby-friendly though :)

Finally, I thought it would be a good to get out of Reading whist it's full of crusty campers... it's only just occurred to me that going via Leeds might not be the smartest move- doh! Hopefully most folk from the SE will be going to Reading instead.

Wetherspoons at Leeds station is baby-friendly until 6pm, with changing facilities in the accessible toilet. It's outside the ticket barriers, but you can ask to be let through and it's not breaking your journey because it's within the station. There's a photo of it in the top left corner of "North Concourse" on this station plan. There are a couple of "Live Departures" screens within the pub to ensure you don't miss the Carlisle train.

Shouldn't have a problem with those two bars I mentioned and babies. Mr Foley's has a large upstairs dining area away from the main bar and the Timothy Taylor bar has small individual cubbyholes.

If you are going one way not London and one way via London, then I would think a Reading - Carlisle Route Banbury Stafford return with an excess in one direction to Route +London would be better. If you decide on your return that you would also like to go via London then you can excess the return portion on the way back.

You can ask for an Off-Route Excess at the same time as purchasing your original tickets and there is no penalty for buying on the train regardless of opportunities to buy beforehand.

Indeed. Change of route (in one direction) is the only type of excess (that I can think of) that you could justifiably ask for at the same time as purchasing your original ticket!
Routeing Guide said:
Where two or more permitted routes are available for a specific journey,
customers may wish to travel out by one route and return by another. If a
higher fare applies for the return leg of the journey the customer should be
issued with a ticket for the more direct route and an excess fare issued to
cover the difference in fare for the return routeing. This option should be
made available to customers who wish to pre-book a dual routed ticket prior
to travel.
and there is no penalty for buying on the train regardless of opportunities to buy beforehand.
Absolutely. The same fare is applicable regardless of whether there was "opportunity to pay before boarding" or not, and the excess for one portion it is half the difference between the fare paid and the appropriate fare.

Appropriate means the cheapest available fare that would allow travel at the time travelled and includes Railcard discounts (where the original was discounted).
