Reader offer tickets

Yesterday I travelled on the 18.35 from London - Newcastle for a £9 single ticket. It was booked a local newspapers site, but it was one of these deals where you have to collect 6 tokens from the paper and take them on your journey. My question is do they ever check these tokens? Ive used them 5/6 times in the past and never been asked, and yesterday was no different.

No they don't ever ask.

There are many offers up and down the country on different newspaper sites, all with different tokens. Even the same newspaper can run a different offer every month or two. Also NXEC run their own offers with a voucher downloadable from their website.

There is no way a guard can possibly know which tokens to ask for, as the ticket type is always "Reader offer". I suppose they could ask for tokens but they would not have any way of knowing that the tokens presented were 'correct'.

I have once been asked to show the tokens when travelling with NXEC. I was travelling to Kings Cross, dining in the First Class restaurant and the Inspector seemed to think that was odd behaviour when using a £8 Standard Reader Offer ticket. He seemed very disappointed when I was able to produce the tokens.

A few minutes later, a very apologetic Chief Steward appeared to say that he had been instructed by the Inspector to ensure that I vacated the First Class seat promptly on finishing my meal. We quickly agreed that the solution was an additional quarter bottle of dry white wine. I left the seat immediately I finished the wine at Finsbury Park.

It depends whether you're drinking a bottle of **** cider on a park bench at 2 in the morning swearing and shouting, or whether you're sharing a bottle of alsace white with your partner in the restaurant car of an NXEC (soon to be East Coast Trains) service.

We had an offer on TPE once. It was the only offer on, and we were given samples of the vouchers to look for. Sometimes I asked to see them, sometimes I didn't.
