Read Rail Magazine online from your library

Cambridgeshire public libraries have a subscription to Press Display from here:

If I enter the code on my library card and search for "Rail UK" I can read Rail magazine for free.

Generally its available on the Saturday after the publication date. You can read issues from the last 3 months or so.

Its not as easy to read stuff as with a paper copy, but its £3.80 cheaper.

I worked for Bromley Public Library Service back in the late 1960s and, in those days, a lot of magazines and periodicals were available for public reading in the various Reference Libraries in the borough. They have, of course, now largely disappeared, as have so many lending libraries, but this seems an acceptable alternative for those able to access these services. My only caveat applies to general free online reading of both newspapers and magazines and that is that it's not a sustainable model. The reason most magazines and newspapers are so expensive, with cover prices increasing by far more than the general rate of inflation, is that the buyer of the physical print edition is subsidising the free online browser, to the extent that when those print sales fall (as they almost inevitably will) then either cover prices must increase again and/or economies must be made. This in turn means journalists are sacked, research is not commissioned et al, meaning that in the end.... How long can Rail News survive as a fortnightly publication, or at all?

Libraries in Wales offer Rail Express and Railway Magazine free online, as well as dozens on other subjects.

I have no idea how much they pay the publishers, how that compares with what they make on a printed copy, how many don't buy the magazines because they can read them online, how many read them online but wouldn't buy them or how the advertising rates are affected but I presume the publishers consider it worthwhile.

Presumably this is a modern version of having the magazine at the library.
Until recently (this year) Railway magazine and Modern Railways were both available at one of the branches of the local library, either to read there or one-week loan, cut-backs have seen the end of that.
