Przewozy Regionalne announced yesterday that the three daily RegioExpress train pairs between Wrocław and Dresden via Görlitz will cease operation from 01 March. The reason given is the withdrawl of funding by the Lower Silesian provincial government.

There will be no substitute bus connection provided between Zgorzelec and Görlitz.

By sheer chance, I used this route in October, due to one of the DB strikes. My Eurocity train from Berlin to Wrocław was cancelled, but I was lucky and got re-routed via ODEG services to Görlitz, then one of these services forward, using Polish traincrew (Being joint DB services, they were cancelled between Dresden and Görlitz).

I had sussed out that, if I needed to, I could walk across the border from Görlitz to Zgorzelec, but didn't need to. In future, that clearly would be necessary...

Are there no local Polish services crossing the border to Görlitz station?

There is a local bus service.

From this press release (in German), it appears the German side were only told on Thursday and are a bit miffed about it. Discussions are taking place, apparently.

No, there are not.

Any local bus services there may be are not coordinated with train arrivals/departures. You're on your own to figure it out.

Not that there are many services on the Polish side anyway. . .

A quick enquiry on the journey planner shows a total of eleven weekday services from Zgorzelec to Wroclaw, three of which are the RE services to be withdrawn. Most notably from a Polish perspective withdrawal of the morning RE will see a service gap from 05:41 to 09:21!

It does seem crazy that the Polish local services don't cross over to Goerlitz main station and back again in these days of open Shengen borders. No doubt that would probably break the rule about not subsidising cross border operations, even if it attracted more income thus saving the local authority some money, and providing more useful transport services to boot.

According to wikipedia:

"There is also common urban management and annual common sessions of both town councils. In 2006 the towns jointly applied to be the European Capital of Culture in 2010. It was hoped that the jury would be convinced by the concept of Polish-German cooperation, but the award fell to Essen, with Görlitz/Zgorzelec in second place."

one might have thought in this spirit of cooperation some sort of useful strategy might be devised for rail services!

it was only a few months ago that the future of this service was confirmed.
Considering that this line had international trains from Dresden to Warsaw and Krakow only a decade ago.

Problem is that not much is electrified in the southeast of that area of Germany. In Poland there is an electric wire above the tracks from Wegliniec. So why run a diesel when it could be electric. The amount of passengers in these trains is not the problem; some times the 1st Class is given for 2nd Class tickets. Furthermore on this line Vogtlandbahn (Trilex) is running, but because it has no trains of it own to run across the border; there are 642 trains from DB present.

It has its own german Wikipage > http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dresden-Wrocław-Express
