Apologies all,
Did say I’d give an update once I got a final response. Basically I had to pay £107 & it’s gone down as not paying. I’ve been given a ‘final warning’ which stays on my ‘file’ so basically can’t make anymore mistakes on the trains! So in essence guilty I guess. Very odd. Thanks again for all the advice

Thanks for letting us know.

On balance, this is a satisfactory result - although I appreciate it’s not what you hoped for. The matter is now closed without any ongoing consequences (apart from to your bank balance and in the railways’ own little world). So you have no need to mention a conviction to employers or volunteering organisations or insurers. As you say, you will have to be careful to make sure you don’t get on the wrong train in future, but if (as I think is the case) you haven’t had any previous problems like that then the chances are that in future you won’t have problems either because your normal approach will be sufficiently careful!

Thanks for your update - my advice now - make sure on any train that is late (15 mins or more) you take the time to claim your delay-repay claim entitlements (or give them to charity which you can do when you claim) to secure some sense of balance.

I suppose the moral of this story is that it is always better to pay at once as by doing so one does not give TIL any excuse to start asking for extra money
I do struggle to understand why you did not pay on the spot which presumably would have closed the matter there and then regardless of what the ticket inspector might or might not have said.
