Re-nationalisation

Hi,

My query relates to a train driver role but I guess that it would affect all positions within the industry.

I'm trying to understand the risk profile of entering the rail industry and I'm struggling to understand how a nationalised rail system would look if Labour got their way.

Would it be good / bad news, what are the possible upsides /downsides, would jobs / conditions be at risk, improved?

I have no idea how it could play out and given the mess that our politics are in it is not inconceivable that Labour could gain power.

Sorry, bit of a heavy subject and it is nothing to do with political persuasion just trying to understand the potential risks ahead.

No real risk to the job , employer may change , pay rises may be less dramatic but zero chance of pay cuts I'd say , I wouldn't let it put you off, sadly by time the Tories allow an election Corbyn will No doubt of retired / been ousted and nationalisation will quietly be forgotten as it was when Blair got in in 97.

If anything, nationalisation would only make the unions stronger and the jobs more secure. Wages would probably be harmonised as well as conditions, no one would talk a pay cut so you’d end up with the best wages and possibly the best conditions.

It’s not gonna happen though, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Re-nationalisation. Because the government do such a good job running the country as it is

In terms of recruitment and job security, I agree that the unions will become stronger. I don’t actually think it’ll ever happen to be honest, but in terms of job security, as long as the unions did get stronger, I wouldn’t see there being a problem.

The railway has two types of people working on it. Railwaymen/ women and those who are here for the money. I for one would do this job for minimum wage. They fact that I get paid what I do is a bonus. I dare say if wages along with terms and conditions were cut you wouldn't get the numbers applying you do now.

You might also get back to all employees (not just passenger TOCs) having rail concessions across the whole country - and not having to pay tax on the money that your employer pays to buy them in.

Totally agree. I know jobs where people earn a crap ton of money just by picking up a phone and saying the right thing day in day out. Not very rewarding in my eyes and I would much prefer to work in a job like the railway for a lot less money!
