Does anyone have any idea what's gone wrong at Raynes Park this evening?

I've had a succession of trains sitting at the end of the garden for the last hour or so (a 455, a 450, a 'dark' 455 and now another 'in service' 455 for what it's worth).

Twitter says is a broken train but to disrupt all lines in the way that SWTs web site reports makes it feel like more than that. (I can understand the commuter routes impact but am not sure how the SW Mainline would be affected if a commuter train failed on the local lines).

Because the trains which normally use the local line have to use the mainline to get around the failure, so twice as many trains using the one line!

Or do you think all the trains on the local line just sit there queueing up for an hour or 2 iuntil the failure is removed?

Edit-
NRES is now saying it is an electrical supply problem which wont be fixed until end of service.

On the Epsom line, queuing up is exactly what they were doing. Depending where the fault lies, what other choice is there.

Fair comment on the mainline though, I tend to have a blinkered view on this sort of detail sometimes (although my uneducated assumption would be that an electrical problem would affect the fast as well as the slow).

From at least one tweet suggesting no trains at Berrylands, I assume they were diverting after Surbiton rather than just before NM. I guess that would depend how much of the line the problem wiped out.

If trains have to queue up because of a failure, do they do so behind signals, or does the signaller talk them past at caution so they can draw up to the rear of the train in front and maximise the available queueing space?

They sit at a signal each like they would any other time. Trains generally don't que up massively, they get turned around or held in platforms (if the boxes are on the ball!!)

Talking them past and having 2 (or more) in a section will cause massive problems and would be an accident waiting to happen

There was an electrical fault on 5G64, which required the unit to be paddled up, that shut both up lines for a while, but that caused chaos, but was necessary to get the train moving again.

Permissive working wouldn't be applicable in a situation like this.

Not to mention a lot of paperwork for someone... :|

AIUI: A fault on one of the units on this service: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W15854/2014/10/27/advanced was causing electrical problems.

Also a southern 455 going from eastleigh to selhurst failed on the main line due to a MA failure, was rescued by an 8 car swt 455 and dragged to Wimbledon park.

Ouch, last thing I'd want to do is paddle up a DC unit!

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but what must one do to paddle up a unit?

I'm a siggie so have very limited knowledge about it, but from what I understand it involves a big wooden paddle, and it pushes the shoe away from the third rail, and then it's secured in the upright position.

No doubt there's more to it (isolating equipment etc) but that's all I need to know!

To paddle up you need to get two paddles, You use one to lift up the shoe and then place the second one underneath the shoe. Then lower the shoe onto the paddle so there is no contact between the shoe and third rail. You do this to all shoes on the third rail. All dc units have 2 paddles in each cab so four on a unit.

No bull. Lost more 450 work a while back with the Ascot services going over to 456 operation.

And those upstairs still don't get why driver's are leaving our depot for others which have a greater proportion of mainline work and I don't blame them in the slightest.
