The best I can offer is a very long time ago (pretty sure it was a 4VEP I was travelling in) which did a last minute diversion via Southfields on the way into Waterloo. Not a frequently used route for passenger trains at the time.

I did once see a Hull Trains 180 come off the Goblin and onto the NLL very late at night. Thought that was very out of place, but I think I then found out they sent them that way for maintenance at OOC as that was when FGW had some and did the maintenance for them. So wasn’t really that odd after all.

One thing I did see that was rare, was a single Mark 3/4 coach, can’t recall which one, in full NXEC livery, shunted into the siding alongside platform 4 at St Neots. Rare because I’ve never seen anything but the very occasional track maintenance unit use it. Plus the complexities of getting it there would mean it was taken out of a rake and shunted there on its own.

We had a pair of class 20's down the Marston vale last week. They were hauling one well wagon!

EMT once sent a 156 empty stock to Norwich during a blockade between Peterboroughand March. It was diverted via the Hitchin and Cambridge!

For me one that sticks in my mind is the occasion where a 'Steam Dreams' special tour in the 2000s (2002 I think) added stops between Bournemouth and Weymouth to cover for a failed SWT service train. Thus we had ordinary passengers using the steam (BR Standard 'Five' 73096) working, with green slam-door coaches, for their normal journeys!

Further back still, in January 1982, I recall a snowy spell when I was waiting at Sutton to get home to Epsom. Many cancellations saw a Victoria to Bognor (4CIG, 4BIG, 4CIG) working given an extra stop at Epsom. I happened to board next to the buffet car and bought a coffee while doing well over 80mph (before the days of over-speed controls!) to Epsom, just to be able to say I had used a buffet car on a service train between Sutton and Epsom!

I'm sure I remember a couple of years ago the 56 off the Chirk logs rescuing a TfW Mk4 set which came to grief somewhere on the north wales coast.
