Pacers, as a collective family, have paid more visits to Scotland than I previously thought. A bit of digging in the right places has brought up a few rare gems in relation to this subject...

As briefly touched upon above, 143s briefly worked on the Edinburgh-Bathgate Line upon it's reopening in 1986. Not sure how long this arrangement lasted for or how many units were used, but 150s & 101s quickly took over.

140001, before calling Dufftown it's home in preservation, made it's way up north to Scotland for trial runs on the Glasgow South Western Line as far as Barrhead & Kilmarnock in August 1981. Not much was obviously thought of it, as the GSWL held onto it's extant stock until the 156s came along a few years later.

141s made appearances in Kilmarnock in the late 1980s; one presumes this was during the reengineering of the class in an attempt to cure their persistent unreliability issues? One (141111) was spotted during a open day of some description at Killie within this time period too.

And finally, 142s have made several fleeting visits to rare Scottish locations while in transit to/from Glasgow Works in Springburn for refurbishment, Johnstone on the Ayrshire Coast Line perhaps being one of the more unusual locations.

That'll be what I'm thinking of!

There's now only one through service between Newcastle and Glasgow via the Tyne Valley - the 06:30 Newcastle to Glasgow and the 16:13 return. In both cases Northern crew work the Tyne Valley sector, whilst ScotRail crew work the service North of Carlisle.

Whilst correct there are also still the 2 “joint” ScotRail / Northern services which originate at Dumfries which run through. One advertised, one not (the unadvertised one sees a ScotRail unit visit Nunthorpe and Morpeth before heading back on another Newcastle to Carlisle service which unofficially runs as a through service to Glasgow)

Carlisle Northern Depot still have Dumfries work BUT can not take 142s to Dumfries even if they are the only unit left around Carlisle station due to the restriction

There was of course a 142 working between Crewe and Warrington on the WCML in the late 90s, when it was pretty much crushed in the Stanthorne crash. I take it was an ECS movement, but what was it doing there - was it an FNW ECS movement?

What is the reason for the GSW ban? Are they also not banned from the WCML into Scotland too? That should make an interesting route If any ever need to go again to sunny Scotland.

No idea bud. I know we sent them up there for a spruce up a few years back but they seem to be restricted since (they are permitted on some parts of the GSW but just not the bits that allow it to escape England in first place)

Have Pacers ever made scheduled trips into a London terminus?

There is a photo of a pacer reaching Birmingham New Street on WMBuses forum
In the back of my mind something tells me there was at least one unit in the West Midlands which worked on the Crosscity line. I have got no evidence of it, but it would have been before electrification. The first generation suburban dmu's were beginning to show their age, being so intensively worked.

Not a 'one off', but for a short time pacers were allocated to Cornish branches. Very occasionally they reach Penzance (I'm pretty sure I read that on this forum, no less).

From a visit to Cornwall in the 70's, the St Ives unit apparently took up/finished its duty at Penzance

It's a useful service of traveling from Kilmarnock to East of England. Disappointing to hear there's so few services
