Hi all,

Can any of you hardcore RS enthusiasts tell me why the player-driveable HST has a dead power car on the rear but the AI ones are both on?

It annoys me greatly to have a OEO HST on it yet the AI has the undoubted pleasure of both engines powering!

Earlier was my second full attempt at getting a go in on RS' Paddytoon to Oxford. Now the first time I was just west of Slough before I hit 125mph. Anyone who's done the route to death in reality will know that this is not normal! Indeed, it isn't for any set with both engines on full power. 19 miles to hit 125mph is pathetic.

You might think that I was driving slowly. None of it, I was on N5 all the way from Old Oak Flyover. What was also weird was how I was doing 120mph at West Drayton but it took several more miles on N5 to pick up the extra 5mph.

Now the first time I didn't know why this was the case, but I went and had a look at the rear power car. Not only did I find it weird to be numbered 43000 but the fact it wasn't even idling, ie with no noise off it at all, felt bizarre.

James has the payware Valenta sound pack for RS, so whilst 43028 and its Marston cooler (you couldn't possibly tell the sounds came from 43166 ;)) sounded divine and it was a pleasure to drive a route offering some proper thrash opportunities at high speed and one that I'm well familiar with, the big downside is the OEO set RS provides you with.

Is there something I was supposed to do with the rear power car to fire it up? As far as I'm aware there isn't, but I would like that confirmed.

Either way, like I say the payware sounds and the routes are just fine but the dodgy HST performance has put me off using it again. Which is a shame as the MSTS HST sounds like Thunderbird 1 which puts me off using that too!

Anyway, thoughts on what I might need to do to get the rear power car working would be appreciated!

Sure you didnt leave the locomotive brake on?:)

There is another pet peeve of mine since someone pointed it out, both Hsts (both the FGW and the BR one) dont have a graduated brake fitted. Having said that, there is a modified HST that you can download from UK trainsim which has the graduated brake, which you can if you wish using another programme on uktrainsim (I think its called RS Kickstart) swap out the original power cars.

It may be worth doing a similar thing with the dummy powercar, replace it with a powercar and see if that makes any difference to power and engine sound.

I would also recommend flagging it up on the Rail simulator homepage. They dont reply much, but it would appear from comments on uktrainsim that they do take note of what people say.

One thing I do know, looking in the developers documents, it suggests if you develop a new locomotive that you set the top speed a little above what it is in reality, the logic being the game slows down acceleration as you near the modelled top speed. I dont know how easy this would be to mod in the game, but I imagine it would go some way towards solving the problem. It would be interesting to know what the top speed of the HST is with the new engine...

I would be curious to know if the Deltic is close to real performance. In the game the second engine doesnt appear to crank up till you get to 30mph.

Some interesting points there, might have a pop over to the RS site later after I've woken up.

Thanks for that!
