Anybody know of any services that use unusual platforms at calling points?

Such as the back platform at Penrith NL or Birmingham New St p12?

Thanks :D

Often see XC Voyagers starting at platform 1 and 12 at Newcastle. For anyone who doesn't know, both are bay platforms, and not usually used for XC or East Coast services. They seem to be put there to free up a through platform.

P12 at Birmingham New St is used regularly,XC's Brum-Nottm generally frrom the south end and a LM service from the north end (used to be the Hereford but not sure if it still is or another service now).

Just always seems a lot quiter than the others (by way of number of trains in there), but maybe that's just off-peak

two trains in Cardiff left on "not the usual" platforms today. Nottingham to Cardiff cross country service departed at the platform it came in on after running over 15m late and a HST bound for London Pad. departed from the platform it came in (normal platform for a Swansea bound)

seen a virgin pendolino use platform 9 at new street...never seen them past platform 7 before.

If the through Wolves train (xx23 from Euston) is late, and ends up getting looped in behind the LM local from Coventry, it will use P9 at New Street; it happens to be the free platform at the time during the TT.

A Pendolino I was on yesterday from Manchester went into Platform 1 at Stockport - I think it is the first time I have seen Plaform 0 withut it being obscured by other station buildings - and over the past 2 1/2 years I have been on various XC and VT trains and not been into that platform.

probably my weirdest is a glasgow central - east kilbride service from the old platform 13. Or a ayrshire from sub platform 6 . Less weird maybe is a glasgow queen 170 from edinburghs platform 7

I remember once seeing a Della in P9 at the Cross. Probably Grand Central, but I'm not sure now.

That's normal; they certainly used to use it for at least one service a day. Pain in the backside going through to the West End of the station, just to walk all the way back again!

At night. you can get some odd ones at Central depending on engineering works. I remember a Whifflet service out of Platform 11A, front two carriages, because there was a lot of work on the East Side of the bridge.

The other odd one I remember was a Cumbernauld train on Platform 4 at Motherwell, due to problems on the usual Platform 3.

Happens all the time now.

On one occasion about 10 years ago - don't know why because there was no engineering or any other disruption - had an Epsom train leave Waterloo platform 19 and cross all the way over the ladder to get to the down main slow.:o

It was quite handy for me actually as I had just come off a Eurostar and if I'd had to go all the way over to platforms 1 - 6 I'd have missed it and it was a 30 minute wait for the next one...

In the evening a 323 appears at platform 12 at Manchester Piccadilly, which is a rarely used platform and certainly very rare to see an electric unit at that station. I think it could be the case that the service is sent to that platform to make sure the electrics remain in working order.

I've seen a HT 180 at P9 quite a few times in the evening peak - from about 18:15 onwards (I usually park my bike up there...)

What determines when P1 at Peterborough is used? From the looks of it, it can only fit 4 cars, and presumably isn't accessible towards Whittlesey, so I assume it's only ever used for off-peak FCC trains. It used to always seem to be in use at weekends (really handy when coming back from up North!). Admittedly more and more trains are 8-car off peak now, but FCC only ever seem to use 3a (except evening peak, or if a wayward Lincs-bound 153 blocks EC).

Likewise the bay platform at Huntingdon. Do the couple of daily Huntingdon terminators use it?

I think you mean "electric unit in that platform" don't you?

Yes I meant platform. I think once a day is rare considering there are around 6 323 departures every hour at Piccadilly and platforms 11 and 12 are effectively shut down in the peaks to maximise capacity through platforms 13 and 14.

At Crewe cannot remember the last time I saw passenger trains use P8 or P10 and P12 is normally only used by charter trains these days.

I was also on a LM 350 that used P2 a couple of months ago, another little used platform there as far as I'm aware.

LM's Liverpool services sometimes used to use platform 12 if a VT service required platform 11 at around the same time. With Liverpool-London's omitting Crewe in the standard pattern it decreases the chance of that happening now.

Huntingdon's an unusual one - there's no route into it for arriving trains from either the Down Fast or the Down Slow, so anything using it has to shunt to get there.

Doncaster Platform 2's in a similar situation - is anything booked to use it now? I seem to remember at least one Lincoln service being booked to depart from there, and I've seen one arrive from Lincoln on Platform 3b before shunting to Platform 2.

P12 is used by two services a day; both Lancaster terminators (xx30 from Euston) - can't remember off the top of my head which ones they are.

One train per week (on a Sat) is due to use p1 at Huntingdon
Its a southbound KGX service at about 0830. No passenger services from the south due in.

Peterborough is used in morning peaks, and very rarely when ohter plats are taken up :D

Once got a Haywards Heath train (Littlehampton/Ore service) From a Gatwick Express platform at Victoria. I also got a Peterborough train (FCC Via Stevenage/St. Neots) From Platform 1 at KGX

Does Stockport-Stalybridge (once a week) still use platform 3A at Stockport? (3A isn't just one end of platform 3 it's a separate platform between platforms 3 and 4.)

Was at Crewe yesterday morning for the Spitfire tour and there was an Arriva 158 in P8. When we were passing Shrewsbury the same 158 was heading towards Birmingham as part of a 2 unit pair.

First time I have seen anything in Crewe P8 for a long time though not sure if the 158 worked a service train to Shrewsbury or not before joining up to work to Birmingham.
