Random Dreams or Nightmares

Hello all,

Is anyone on here brave enough to share their dreams or nightmares they remember in their sleep? Weather it's good or bad, a dream or a nightmare, weird, bizzare, whatever feel free to post it here.

I know dreams or nightmares are supposed to have a reason behind them but to be honest, most of the ones I get are just random and I don't think there is supposed to be a reason! Does anyone else get this sometimes?

Anyway I'll start with a handful I can remember, I'll put a reason if I think there is one after it:

1. Most recent one I can remember was one of those I-doubt-there-is-a-meaning one. It was based on the Swindon and Cricklade railway with it's extensions open both ends. I remember someone saying there was a DMU on it but an EWS 33 and DBS red 37676 showed up at the front!! I remember getting on and it taking forever to actually get going and then I got woken up by my phone alarm (which, ironically, is actually a sound clip of 37218 thrashing away!)

Reason - No idea!!!

2. A bus dream I had some years ago, I was at Atworth waiting for the (then) X72 to Bath. I believe it was an eclipse on the job but I remember getting on and the First Bus driver I used to see alot on the X72 was driving. I remember asking if I could drive it to Bath, and he got out and said 'yeah sure, go ahead' ! I remember sitting in the cab and driving off then I can only remember a clip of me reversing (for some reason) into the bus bay (at the OLD bus station I may add) as if I've driven one before!

Reason? - It might be the fact I'd like to be a bus driver, and maybe I'm thinking I'd be good at it maybe?

3. One nightmare I remember is I was at my old house in Melksham and I was alot younger than I am now. I remember seeing a big tornado in the distance slowly making it's way towards the house. I then went running to my mum screaming that we should get out ASAP as there's a tornado heading this way. She didn't seem bothered or in a rush, and I remember not many other people being fussed either when I looked out at the street. I don't remember what happened from there.

Reason - Only thing I can think of is maybe I was worrying too much about something that really wasn't worth worrying about?

4. Another one I had in Melksham was in the park behind our house, however it wasn't a park anymore, it was more of a war zone! The sky was deep orange/red and there was rubble and the odd flame on the ground. I was trying to get from one end of the park to the other, and I remember these bullets and rocks flying past as I was trying to dodge them. I however couldn't seem to move fast, I couldn't even get up to walking speed it was as if I had a leg missing but I didn't. Then some bomb hit the ground in front then I fell into the small crater if left.
I couldn't move at all nd I remember screaming for help but I couldn't speak, nothing came out my mouth! I woke up eventually rather hot! I don't want that nightmare again that's for sure!

Reason - Probably an obvious one, I felt like I was stuck and I couldn't move on. I know why but it's a personal reason that I do not wish to share on a public forum.


I'll be interested in reading anyones weird or disaster ones. If you think there is a reason feel free to add it below like I have done. Also, if you have had a nightmare or dream recently (last night or whatever) but can't think why, then post it here, I'm sure some of us might like to try and figure it out (I won't want to go into too much detail though if it ends up being too personal).

I'd also advise to keep this thread clean of course, I have had some rather rude dreams, but I don't think they belong here

I don't remember any of my own dreams, so don't have much to add to this, however, I remember hearing about one of my friends suddenly shouting "SHOPPING SPREE!!" in the middle of the night

I get these a lot, like you need to run away or leave somewhere but everyone is being so slow at leaving. You do end up waking up by the time they are just leaving.

I'm always falling of telephone poles, these are really high ones aswell, I was told in real life if I dont wake up before I hit the ground then I will die in real life, lol

A selection of my own, ranging from the downright outrageous (like this morning's!) to the apparently prophetic (which I alluded to a couple of days ago in the Haunted Railways thread).

So...

Southend Buses

This morning, having woken up at 8:30 and fallen asleep again, I had a dream in which I was back home (as is often the case in dreams). The junction outside Southend Victoria was still being done up, yet there was a most peculiar escalator (think the Escalator to Nowhere in The Simpsons; Marge vs the Monorail) opposite, where there is/was [not sure] a bus bay. After speeding down said escalator, a former Arriva Southend Dennis Trident drove past, and then I found myself in the Deeping underpass (formerly Southend's "second bus station", and now not served at all!), wearing next to nothing! Then, I suddenly realised that this was actually dream, and so I clicked my fingers in an effort to make some clothes appear... which didn't work. A bit later, a Volvo Olympian turned up on the route home, but I had to forego it due to my indecent state! This dream also had two running gags; 1, I kept losing my backpack, and 2, I kept lusting after random girls...!

I also dreamt (before waking up at 8:30 and falling asleep again) that First introduced a new Dennis Dart (not SLF) -operated route between Bath and Canvey Island. As though that isn't ridiculous enough, if I said that it ran via Huddersfield... I have also dreamt of driving an old G-reg Dennis Dominator (horrible things) from the top deck, with a girl I fancied at the time next to me in a black bra and little else. (I've used that word twice in two weeks on here! :?)

The Persistent 312

When I was younger, I used to have the same "nightmare" (sure it was...!) once every so often. I was back home in Shoeburyness, and walking to what was then our family home from school. Mum went the normal way, and I went the fun way - a path between the main one and the road that was sunk below ground level, as an interchange for several underpasses under a roundabout. But then, I would find myself trapped in one of the underpasses briefly, and then the next thing I would know Mum was gone - and there was a 312 (in NSE colours!) charging towards me on this path. I always found it quite funny!

One time, it mutated into a chase around the same home, with a D-stock unit deputising for the 312. It ran everyone down - including even me!

Fighting Evil

Sometimes, although not so much now, I used to have adventure dreams which often involved detective work or staving off enemy forces. One particularly memorable one (and just about the only one ever to cast my brother in a positive way!) was that we were at my aunt's former home (just three minutes from the site of the 312 above) watching the children's TV show Playbox. Suddenly though, the signal was lost, and we police had a chase on our hands. We managed to catch the perpetrator - and received a medal for it!

Another time, I was in Kingston, with a bunch of bad guys with strange green goop attempting to catch me and a few friends. Most had one life, while a couple of friends had two; I had three. If they forced this goop into your face, you lost a life. I think I lost one. I have not been especially fond of the colour green (thinking of it as "evil" even! ) ever since...

The "High-Mare"

After being forced out of high school for one of the worst reasons you will ever hear of (a throat infection), I started having dreams about it, which I christened the "High-Mare". I would find myself at high school, and often leave midway through in a depressed manner. Then something would happen which varied every time (one time I met Sir Alex Ferguson in the local take-away!), until finally the dream was over. They used to really bother me, and at one point I had over ten in two weeks! I never went more than two weeks without one until October 2009, when they finally became less frequent. Since then, I have had similar dreams about Southend as a whole, but not to the same degree.

The Prophetic...?

I have often had dreams in which I have dreamt of something and then watched it unfold, to the point that some have requested for me to not write about them in case the same thing happens (it happens with my creative writing as well). One serious one was a LUL train being derailed by an explosion - in the first week of July 2005.

But the most memorable didn't concern the railways. It was December 2006, and I was walking along a "volcanic landscape" (a phrase I always use when describing this dream), when I looked to the right and saw clouds, both in the sky and on the ground - and London (well, St Paul's, Big Ben and the Tower) in the distance. Moving between the two sets of clouds were several tornadoes, heading towards the city.

I woke up from that dream at approximately 5:30 in the morning. At 10:49, a tornado struck Kensal Green.

One last point... In my life, I have had the grand total of three "adult dreams". All three happened within two weeks of each other. Interestingly, only one featured a real girl - and came after a different example of the "adventure" dreams above, which felt like a real-life RPG!

Ivo, you've had a dream where you know it is a dream?!?

Damn you beat me to it! There has been a lot of nights before I go to sleep where I want to see if I can have a dream and then know it is a dream, imagine the riot you can cause and know you can escape...providing you know 10% it's a dream!!

I'd be interested in more Ivo since you have some to hand by the sounds of it!

One other one that springs to mind is a dream at Reading. I was in a helicopter, my old schoolmates dad was the pilot (who doesn't even fly copters! He drives on the ground in Honda's as he is a Honda employee) and my schoolmate was there too, and we headed down towards Reading however it all went a bit wrong, and we ended up crashing onto the ground. The odd thing was we smashed onto the Reading avoider line (now torn up anyway in reality) and we went sliding along the whole line.
I wasn't worried about the crash, I was more interested in scooping in the track for my Quail map!!

Reason - I think I was wondering how to scoop in Platform 10 that night when gandering through my Quail and I believe I was also thinking how on earth can I do the 'back road'

A few years ago, I had one with a wooden formation halfway down a cliff [the term "vertigo" does not exist here!], when I realised it too was a dream. I looked at my watch, which was there; I touched my glasses, and they were there. Once every so often, I have successfully done the same in dreams since (like a test almost).

I could give a whole stream if you want; maybe we could give it a go tomorrow?

I have had a weird dream a few times about having toothache, touching them and they all shattered leaving me toothless. I also had a reoccuring dream when I was a kid about falling down some never ending stairs.

Most of my other dreams are probably too mucky to put on a public forum!!!

I dont know who told you that, but if you think about it - if everyone died during those kinds of dreams how would anyone alive know what the killer dreams were?

Anyway, I have a recurring dream where I am on the roof of a ridiculously high office block. For some reason I have to walk along a narrow brick wall to the next equally high building but I never manage it. I always fall off.

In the dim and distant past, I always woke up before I hit the ground but recently I have fallen all the way and got up distinctly unharmed only to go back into the building and enter the lift to go back up to the roof again.

Sometimes, the lift doors open onto the flat roof, but sometimes they open and as I am walking out I find they have opened onto the narrow brick wall.

There's a name for this; that's known as vivid dreaming.

And I see more than one person has mentioned dreaming of falling when they were younger; I read a theory about that once in which some scientist suggested that the "falling" dream, which is very common in young children and gets less so as age increases, is a subconscious memory of being born.

Interesting theory, but no way of either proving or disproving it unfortunately.

Cheers Peter. As someone who is always up for a bit of scientific research, this will certainly be something for me to look into.

That's just given me an idea... I might make a real quiz for you all! Maybe a £5 travel voucher could be in the offing for the winner!

I remember a few, like once watching an old lady get eaten by a giant turkey. There have been a few rail-related ones. I remember once standing beside a tunnel watching a newly-rebuilt Royal Scot rolling in from a station at the other end, only for someone to start explaining about the magnesium components in the boiler. A second later, I was running full-tilt down the tunnel, and five seconds later was doing the Hollywood thing of trying to outrun an enormous ball of fire. Not sure whether a boiler made out of magnesium really would blow up, but this one sure as heck did. I reached a set of glass doors at the other end of a station platform, then ducked behind a wall to avoid the shockwave. Then woke up.

The other was a recurring nightmare about falling off Platform 4 at Reading in front of an HST. That probably has something to do with the fact that it almost happened in real life (power car 43145 back in 2000) where I ended up bouncing off the side of the cab rather than going under the wheels. Just lucky.

If you mean the thing where you wake up and try to move, but can't, then I used to get something like that. It doesn't seem to happen any more, partly because I took to forcing myself to move one arm, then slapping my legs as hard as possible. It worked sometimes, but left bruises.

Yes, like that but the more I try to move the more I can't. It feels like someone is holding you down. I can't even speak when it happens. There is a terrible feeling of fear that goes with it, even though I know what it is now. I sometimes see things that aren't there too. Luckily it only lasts about 15 seconds for me, I've heard it can be longer in other people though.

I get the recurring dream that is well known amongst actors, apparently. When you are standing on stage in a play but don't know what your enxt line is, or even what play it is!

The strange thing is that although I did a lot of acting in my youth I haven't done any at all for seven years now!

I also get a student dream - I am in my final year of University, I haven't been to any classes at all and I have three essays to do in a week!

Amazing. I get a very similar one where I am standing outside the final exam room waiting to go in and realising that I havent done any studying of the subject at all, for as long as I can remember.

There is another one where I am at work on nights and discover that the morning shift are due to arrive in half an hour and I have done nothing all night, but the more I try and catch up, the more difficult everything becomes.

I get two sleep phenomena usually; the falling from a great height in the sleep and causing a chronic "impact" spasm for real..not good if there's someone lying beside you!

I also get the 'unable to move' type dream, where a situation arises that needs a quick getaway, but there's something holding you back - like being tied to something heavy, and no amount of effort can make you move!

I'm also petrified I shout something odd in my sleep, I can get a bit heated and violent in my dreams (good to have an outlet....) and I worry I'm having a full-blazing row with the bedside table!

I used to get that all the time when I was younger! It was so frustrating! I'd also dream I was driving a car in slow motion. Changing the gears was torture!
