I’ll be most likely attending a wedding in Bristol (nearest station Temple Meads) in August this year

Basic journey - Friday 29th Ramsgate to Temple Meads leaving lunchtime. Return journey 31st leaving around 10 am

I’m also conscious that engineering works may have an impact - to the extent that if they are that bad I may not attend. AIUI notification of engineering works is around three months ahead

I don’t wish to be tied to specific trains

Is there a ticket that I can buy now that would be good financially which would take account of any possible cancellation

Or should I wait till nearer the time. I have a senior railcard

Cheaper tickets via Warminster/Salisbury. Otherwise via London.

You can buy the tickets you want on the day, there’s really no need to try and buy sooner.

Off-peak returns are usually cheapest as long as you can comply with their time restrictions, which should be fine with what you say. Again, you can buy at the station on the day.

You can make seat reservations through the GWR web site even if you don’t have the ticket, if you want.

Personally I’d pay the higher price to go via London, two trains plus underground connection, but you might choose otherwise. You might be OK with the Super Off-peak returns via London also, which you can also buy on the day of travel. £61.65.

I’d probably pick the via London route on the day

Have to say given my age and the occasion the first class on GWR is tempting but you don’t seem to get that much for your bucks. Especially food wise

Likewise (on age) you could look at eg Seatfrog for an upgrade but I’d personally take my own sandwiches and not bother. I used Bath-London a lot in the 1990s but the onboard service in first class was much better.

The Super Offpeak should be fine, so long as you are through Paddington by 1500.

You can also use it via Waterloo East-Waterloo-Salisbury if you want, avoiding the Underground from King's Cross, but it's significantly slower.
