Quite a farce in the morning, but it turned out to be a really good day. Loved the sheep remains thing, made me giggle away!

Gotta ask, bearing in mind your comment on it being a rail forum not a drinking forum (are you on Untappd?), but I trust you were enjoying some proper beers?

Did untappd for a bit last year, but found it cumbersome.

Beer of choice in Dingers was Tennants Cold (lager)...<D

Slowly getting through these..!

The Merseyrail trip... Excellent clear out!

Your impulse trip to Rochester(!) is nuts but I'm glad it worked out, the track requirement was ticked, and you enjoyed it :)

Shame about the incredibly long fester in the morning but it sounds like a good day other than that.

Again, thanks for the nice comments....

...now let's crack on!

26/07/2016 - The Land of Lorne Day 5 - Never mind the Polloks...

Despite a latish night, the usual early start was made, and the usual 158723 appeared on the first Inverness service. I had time for one last shack scratch in the Highlands, so bailed at Muir of Ord, waiting 20 minutes for a nice winner in 158706 to take me in to Inverness. Less time was available for breakfast today, so Spoons provided a (Lorne, of course) sausage bap and toast.

Returning to the station, a disappointing dud 170408 was taken down to Perth, where I changed to equally dud 170413 for the run to Stirling. A small bit of new track took my eye next, with semi-winning pair 158722 + 158727 taking charge for the six miles to Alloa. The station here is conveniently situated next to Asda, so I picked up a meal.deal for lunch, then joined the same pair back to Stirling, and on to a shack scratch at Croy.

I dropped back to the following service in search of a last bit of nutrax. 170410 was a nice winner for the run to Glasgow Queen Street Low Level, via the required North to West curve at Cowlairs. I now had a decision to make. It was 15.10, and I had prebooked tickets home on the 17:40 from Central. I was tempted to just chill out for a couple of hours....

I didn't, though. Still as dud as a dodo, 320317 appeared to take me to a new shack at Jordanhill, situated on Crow Road (which will have meaning for fellow fans of Iain Banks' novels). Crossing over, I did some linear leaping. 334002 was good for a trip to Hyndland, 334034 + 334035 even better to Partick, and dud 318269 inevitable to Central.

It was now 15:50, so I had an hour and a half to "play". I decided to go for 314s and shacks. Then promptly entered the wrong platform! Fortunately, although dud, 156467 was on a local service, so I headed for Pollokshaws West. I had a look at the local area map here, then set off on the 10 minute walk toShawlands. Now for the 314 fest. I had previously had four of the sixteen, so hoped for winners.

First up was 314203, taken out to Langside. My luck continued with 314201 back to Pollokshields West, and with 314205 on the move to bag ]Pollokshaws East. Nemesis then arrived with dud pair 314214 + 314209 in to Central.

Time for a much needed PNB, then I joined 221111, which has probably the best racing form on NR, for a smooth, fast, comfortable and somnulent run to Wigan. Crossing over to Wallgate, the trip ended as it began, with 142044 + 142055 to Manchester Victoria, and 142056 to Castleton, for the kebab shop.

Overall, it was a great trip. Some nutrax cleared, some.winners, some new shacks and a thoroughly good time. However, it wouldn't be long before I was back north of the border! :)

Thanks again for all the nice comments.

The Land of Lorne - coda 30/07/2016

What, he didn't go back again?

Well,.actually, yes. It was quiz time again, this time the Scottish Buzzer Quiz championship at the Voodoo Lounge in Edinburgh. I'd signed up for this thinking it was the same weekend I was up there anyway, but got a week out, somehow.

So an early start on the Saturday morning saw me taxiing down to Manchester (reasonable if booked in advance), then boarding.156464 + 156488 for a run to Preston via Eccles. Here, I stepped back onto 350407 on the Edinburgh service, which I took to Haymarket.

I had about an hour and a half before I needed to find the venue, so decided on a flail on the trams. 269 was first up, and took me out from Haymarket tramshack to the end of the line at Edinburgh Airport, then returned me to Saughton. I went one stop back on 254 to Bankhead, then 257 took me to the other terminus at York Place. Finally, 275 appeared to trundle me back round the corner to St Andrew Square.

I then found the Voodoo Rooms (superb bar/restaurant, done out like an old.fashioned gentleman's club) and got quizzing. Despite being (I think), the only one there who hadn't appeared successfully and won money on TV or radio Quiz Shows, I somehow ended up on the podium, finishing third out of nine.:) :) :)

I then decamped to MacDonalds for a Cheeseburger Meal, before joining 350407 again, for the long run all the way back to Manchester Piccadilly. Dud trams 3035 to Victoria and 3093 home completed another very long day out...

2/8/16 - Budget London Day 1 - The Sound of the Suburbs

It all started with an email from one of Beardie Branson's minions. Virgin West Coast were having a seat sale. I can't resist a bargain, so promptly booked a return trip from Manchester to London for £20. A budget B&B was also booked, the red pen refilled with ink, and I was away.

With being on advances, a later start than normal was made. First stop was the local Spoons for a big breakfast, then dud tram 3104 took me to Rochdale Railway Station, to pick up my tickets. Weird mixed pair 142047 + 155345 took me into Manchester, then dud pair 3042 + 3031 across to Piccadilly. Today's pendo was also dud, with 390115 nevertheless providing a smooth run to Euston. Here, I acquired a travelcard and started shack scratching.

First up was the Barnet branch of the Northern Line. A skip stop strategy was used to clear the stations I hadn't previously visited, as follows:
51532 + 51706 to Mornington Crescent via Tubbleman's 1883 variation :)
51504 + 51505 to Tufnell Park
51501 + 51701 into the daylight at Highgate
51635 + 51636 to the misnamed West Finchley (which appears to be northeast of East Finchley.
51620 + 51619 to Totteridge and Whetstone for a smoke break.
51635 + 51636 reappeared for the run back to Woodside Park
51602 + 51716 to the palatialFinchley Central.
51551 + 51711 back underground to Archway.

Here, I realised that i wasn't going to get to Marylebone in ten minutes, so formulated a plan "on the hoof" to get there in 70 minutes. First move was to Warren Street on duds 51614 + 51615.Changing here to the Victoria Line, 11071 + 11072 then took me to my penultimate required Victoria shack at Pimlico, then 11003 + 11004 on to Stockwell.

Changing back to the Northern here, a southbound train was in, so I jumped on 51609 + 51705 to Clapham North before realising that they were dud! And the duds continued to winning shacks, with 51663 + 51664 obliging to Oval and 51554 + 51555 to Kennington. Finally, winners appeared again, with 51516 + 51517 taking me up toBorough, where the twin tubes run one above the other, then 51598 + 51599 back to Elephant and Castle, where I changed for the Bakerloo.

A very warm trip followed on the "oven line", with 3538 + 3247 taking me through to Marylebone. Upstairs to the mainline station, and 165028 took me up to Northolt Park, then dud165003 back to Sudbury Hill Harrow. Here, I exited the station to find my digs. The Rising Sun is all of.25 yards away, situated above a Singhalese restaurant. So I checked.in, paid and lightened my rucksack, before venturing out again.

to.be continued...

Next time a Seat Sale is on I will find a way of taking advantage!

Rather decent bit of red penning and shack scoring there, fair game :)

2/8/16, continued...

After dumping my bag I walked the 150 yards to my nearest tube station, Sudbury Hill. I had time for a quick Piccadilly line session, so took 201 + 170 up to South Harrow, then 241 + 206 down to Alperton and finally146 + 183 back to Sudbury Town. From here, I took the short walk to the London equivalent of Ardwick, the limited service Sudbury and Harrow Road.

I had left plenty of time to find this shack, so had 20 minutes here. This was quite fun as various trains stormed past, most notably 68013 going full chat on its way to Banbury. Eventually, 165023 rescued me from solitary and took me to West Ruislip, for a double shack score as the NR and LU premises here are separate, albeit adjacent.

It was now time.for some more gratuitous red penning and shack scratching, with the bonus of new track.
The gory details are as follows:
92281/112/092/197 to Ruislip Gardens, technically new track, if parallel to the Chiltern line;
92055/008/450/019 to Northolt on new track as far as South Ruislip
92041/038/030/205 to Perivale, new track again beyond Greenford.
92175/408/160009 to Hanger Lane (with its scenic roundabout;
92007/018242323 to North Acton (new track finishing at the junction);
92339/410/254/071 out to West Acton, in its wooded cutting and the sound of invisible HSTs roaring past nearby;
92037/180/076/325 through to East Acton;
92203/048/464/271 along to Shepherds Bush for another adiacent double shack scratch.

Well, not entirely adjacent, upstairs, across the road and into the rebuilt Shepherds Bush. My move from here depended on what service turned up first. This turned out to be 378218 on a Willesden Junction terminator, which I perforce took to its destination, realising enroute that the bit from Mitre Bridge Junction to Willesden High Level Junction was required track!

At Willesden, I decided to clear out another route for shacks, with the advantage of a variety of traction, and with main line stuff roaring past:
First up, 378214 took me to Stonebridge Park, hidden behind the disused mail terminal;
3547 + 3254 then took me toSouth Kenton
3564 + 3253 onwards to Harrow and Wealdstone
378219 to Headstone Lane, where it was time to reverse direction;
378207 back to Kenton, where 66540 rumbled past in the twilight
3236 + 3559 to the rickety looking North Wembley
3255 + 3554 to Harlesden, separated by bushes from Wembley yard.

378214 then reappeared and took me to Queens Park, where I decided to head back to base the long way, leaving Kilburn High Road and South Hampstead for another day. Instead, I took 3261 + 3553 to Kilburn Park, then 3234 + 3535 onwards to my final.Bakerloo shack at Maida Vale :)

3299 + 3541 then took me to Piccadilly Circus, and the long ride home. There was still the opportunity to pick up a last trio of shacks, though - in this case random ones that I'd missed out on in the past. 213 + 178 took me the short hop to Hyde Park Corner, then 175 + 174 through to the charmingly old fashioned Barons Court. Next up was an airport service, so 233 + 232 took me to Acton Town before 113 + 882 turned up to take me to my temporary home at Sudbury Hill, for chickenburger, chips and bed...

Scores on the doors at the end of the day were 79 winners and 40 new shacks. I set a mental target of 200/100 for the trip. Ambitious, but possibly doable!

68013 would've been going to Bicester, not Banbury because of the block. Sounds like a great day was had there! What time did you get back to the hotel in the end?

Sounds like an excellent time, I do wonder how good (or not) the hotel is, as it sounds like it could be quite a noisy area. If the ching is reasonable that does help of course.

One heck of a clearout of shacks, you're getting as bad as Kite! :lol:

*wonders when Sudbury moved to New Orleans ;)*

Sounded like a very productive day in London clearing up on LU shacks, plus getting the two Chiltern Sudbury stations into your book :)

Cheers for the reviews, chaps. To answer a few of the questions you raised:

1. Sudbury's Rising Sun certainly won't ruin any poor boys, unlike its Louisiana cousin! I paid £78 for two nights. Although an old building, it was scrupulously clean, and the guys running it are welcoming and friendly. I'd certainly stay there again. Its a bit out of Central London, but the Piccadilly Line seems to run quite late. Arrival back was at 22:45 on Tuesday, 23:25 on Wednesday. And I didn't find it noisy.

2. Thanks for the gen re the Banbury block. I thought it was still accessible from the South, obviously not!

3. I'm flattered by the comparison, but I believe Kite159 has just visited his 2,000th NR shack. I'm on 835, so have a long way to go! I really need to look at the more local ones, of which I still need plenty. 31 in Greater Manchester, for example!

I should be writing up day 2, but it's too late at night. So instead, I'll do a London Unit Census, so you can all see why my red pen gets heavy use when I visit.

I've only quickly looked at that list, as I'm still in need of caffeine which is cooling at the moment. That is quite an amount you're needing, I remember my book being that empty about 11 years ago, and noticing you need 70 357s reminds me that I need something like 50 of them. I can't be fudged enough to get motivated to get to Fenchurch Street for them!

£78 for two nights in Sudbury's not bad but not great either. However it does sound worth investigating if only for the location!

That's one helluva wants list! And that's before you factor in all the TfL stuff. At least you're likely to be frequenting the capital again before too long. Looking forward to seeing your write ups of your subsequent days down here.

3/8/16 - London Day 2 - Metroland and the Mystic East

Day 2 started where Day 1 left off. As I was up that way anyway, I decided to clear out the remaining required shacks on the top left corner of the LU system. When buying my day travelcard at Sudbury Hill, I also noticed a piece of new track to go for which I didn't think could be covered on a travelcard, so this was pencilled in for later.

Firstly, I headed north to the Metroland of both John Betjeman and OMD. With one eye kept open for Miss Joan Hunter-Dunn and her tennis racquet, the scratch'n'schack fest recommenced.:

Firstly, 139 + 140 were taken through to the modern looking Hillimgdon
197 + 222 followed up behind as far as Ickenham
135 + 200 were the third tube in a row, to Eastcote
21099 + 21100 then took me to Northwick Park on a Met Line stopper.
Duds 21064 + 21063 took me to Northwood
21074+ 21073 then forwarded me to Croxley, for a PNB.
Duds.21085 + 21086 were next up, back to Moor Park
21069 + 21070 took me up to Rickmansworth
Duds 21015 + 21016.were on a fast service to Harrow on the Hill

Here I changed to the stopper, with 21327 + 21328 (which seem to have been borrowed from the District Line) taking me to my last required Metropolitan shack at Preston Park.

It was now breakfast time, and I decided to seek out a cafe for a Full English. As Preston Park was a bit suburban to guarantee success in this mission, I took 21031 + 21032.to Finchley Road, then a quick linear bash on the high frequency Jubilee Line, with 96092 + 96123 to West Hampstead, and 96004 + 96121 to Kilburn. Here, I exited the station and strolled southwards.

I found what I was looking for just opposite my next required shack, Brondesbury. Ella's Cafe did an excellent job; there are.a number of alternative cooked breakfasts available here, with the options to swap items for.the.fussy. Personally I has bubble and squeak with mine, then crossed over to the station.

The first train here was westbound, so it would be rude not to take 378256 to Brondesbury Park, then.378220 appeared for the run to Kentish Town West. 378212 followed behind as.far as Hackney Wick (does it always blow a gale here?), before dud 378224 trundled me down to Stratford.

(to be continued)

3/8/2016. London Day 2 continued..

Arriving at Stratford, I'd just missed a Broxbourne train. Oh well, lets do some 315s first then!

This section of the day was again an out and back shack scratching effort, although with a small diversion enroute. The full details were:

315857 + 315821 to Seven Kings, passing 37706 on a test train enroute;
315837 + 315842 to Chadwell Heath, which has a handy public loo for a PNB, and a handy shop for water and mints;
315852 + 315845 out to Harold Wood, where 66533 stormed past on a liner;
315842 + 315837 back in to the handy island platform at Gidea Park;
315839 + 315825 to Romford, for something different.

This was 317887 for a trip to Emerson Park, a very rural shack downstairs, but with a.very posh restaurant upstairs. Unsurprisingly, the same unit returned me to Romford. Back to the 315s, then:

315844 + 315832 took me to Goodmayes, where 66558 was on passing ying duties;
315836 + 315826 in to Manor Park, passing a very smart 86401 on Ilford shed.
Finally, 315831 + 315848 in to Stratford, passing 68023 enroute, and arriving in plenty of time for my next connection

This was formed of 317665 for a ride up the Lea Valley line to Broxbourne. A cancelled train put paid to my tentative plan to nip back to Waltham Cross, so I waited here for 317651 + 317503, which took me on my first venture onto connection the new track of the Hertford East branch, but which failed to make my +2 at Rye House.

I had a walk here, spotted a pub by the canal, and decided to chill out for an hour. So I took my pint of orange and bag of crisps to a shady spot, got my book out and kept a wary, and amused, eye on the age 2-5 disobedience competition which seemed to be taking place in the kids play area.:)

Returning to the station, it was time to complete the branch. 317650 + 317881 took me toHertford East and back to St Margarets, then 317883 + 317506 took me to Ware, and then back down to Cheshunt.

I crossed over to the bay here, having decided to clear the Enfield Town line shacks on my way back to London:

Firstly, 317668 + 317511 took me to Stoke Newington
Then came 317719 + 317729 to Bruce Grove
317888 + 317714 took me to Bush Hill Park
315803 + 315804 then took me to Cambridge Heath, where I missed my tight connection northwards.

Deciding to leave Stanford Hill for another time, I nipped out to stock up on cigarettes and chocolate, then caught the returning 317714 + 317888 in to Liverpool Street. From here, I fancied a different class, so 360108 + 360109 took me non-stop to Stratford. From here, well, no visit to London for me is complete without a DLR bash...

Last time I was out here I did the Woolwich extension, so this time I concentrated on the Lewisham route. In skip-stop, liner fashion, I did the following:
23 + 58 to Devons Road
59 + 60 to All Saints
110 + 153 to West India Quay
49 + 56 on the mega mileage move to Canary Wharf :)
115 + 147 + 103 to Crossharbour
26 + 44 + 10 to Island Gardens (I'd done the old high-level terminus here, but the new shack was required);
148 + 149 + 136 to Greenwich.

Here, I went upstairs, looking for the first train back to London. This was noted as being formed of 10 cars. "Ooh good, a pair of 376's", I thought. Then the unmistakable outline of a networker appeared. "Coo, could be a triple winner", thought I. No chance. Whilst the leading 466032 was a winner, middle unit 465158 was not, and tail-end-charlie 465033 seems to stalk me whenever I set foot on South Eastern territory! Anyway, the trio took me to Cannon Street, where my thoughts turned homeward.

Not without picking up some more shacks, though:

21459 + 21460 took me to Ravenscourt Park
21505 + 21506 then forwarded me to Chiswick Park
After a while, 21425 + 21426 took me to the interchange at Ealing Common
Finally, 119 + 124 returned me to Sudbury Hill, and the House of the Rising Sun...

73 winners and 38 new shacks today, which had more of an outer-suburban feel.
