19 May 2016. Cats, shacks and gratuitous wedgefests
My plan of action was to catch the tram at around 07:00. I underslept, and woke in time to just miss the first tram at 05:50 (dud). As I had time in hand, I decided to view the 06:02, do it if it was a winner, otherwise go and buy a paper and wait for the next. It was indeed dud, so Daily Mail and twix were bought. And patience is a virtue, as newly unwrapped 3114 turned up for a winning start to the day.
On a roll, I kept my eyes open to try and identity the following service which we crossed at the railway station. It was also a winner, so I bailed out of 3114 at Derker and 12 minutes later joined 3107 for the run through to Piccadilly. Still with plenty of time in hand, I acquired a breakfast roll (sausage and bacon) and coffee from Greggs, then still 20 minutes up on plan boarded dud 220031 for a speedy run to Stoke.
Here, I waited for my West Midlands Day Ranger to become valid, then joined 221140 for the run to New Street. We arrived about 3 late, however as the rebuilding has now finished this posed no particular problem as the walk to Moor Street has been straightened out. At Moor Street, I sauntered on to Platform 1 in plenty of time for 168002 which was taken to Solihull.
I was in luck with my first Cat, with 68010 Top Cat rolling in to take me back to BMO in style. I eschewed the planned Warwick leap, choosing a sneaky shack score instead, and so 172335 took me down to Hall Road for 172331 back. Duds 172211+172217 then returned me to Solihull for the second moggie of the day, which turned out to be 68012 Choo Choo.
Arriving back at BMO yet again, it was now time to head Kidderminsterwards. Some linear shack scratching was in order, starting with 172339 as far as The Hawthorns. Next up were the returning 172217+172211 to Cradley Heath, then more duds with 172332 to Stourbridge Junction, 172333 to Hagley and finally 172345 to Kidderminster.
Here, I dived next door to the Severn Valley Railway, bought a two-day rover and piled on to a fairly wedged 4TC, which 68025 rumbled through to Bewdley. The various rewrites of the gala timetable due to adding and subtracting locos had worked strongly in my favour as regards winners, with them all working in a nice sequence. Next up was 37716, for a loud and entertaining run back to Kiddy.
There are some on this 'ere forum that don't like Voyagers. If the engine noise which offends, then Network Rail's ninja mutant shoeboxes are not recommended! The 4TC became ever more wedged until, axolotl tanks fully charged, 73952 + 73951 staggered cautiously back to Bewdley. Here I bade farewell to the shuttle as my last winner of the day was due in on a through service from Bridgnorth.
Yes, embarrassingly, 50049 had always previously eluded me! So it was with a smug, happy grin that I returned to Kiddy. And as the train was less wedged, I was able to view the cutest of baby elephants in the safari park. Aww!
Winners done for the day, it was time to relax. So I did a full trip to Bridgnorth behind 20205 + 20142, then returned to Bewdley, where I was staying, behind the most superior loco at the gala, D1015. Tired and happy, I sought my lodgings.
And discovered that Bewdley is the opposite of Feltham.
The Marchgate Guest House was friendly, my room was spotless, and (next morning) served one of the best Full English breakfasts I've ever eaten. The pub (Swan?) two doors down served nice beer and had friendly, welcoming, landlady, barmaid and regulars. And the Severn Indian Restaurant five minutes walk away deserves Michelin Stars.
Smug and replete, I headed to the Land of Nod...
