Railworks 2 Advice

I have ordered my copy of Railworks 2 and it's scheduled to arrive in a few days.

I'm a little bit concerned about installation. I've heard a lot of people say that it is a long, fiddly and complicated process, involving some fancy programme called Steam, which is apparently a nightmare.

I am sure there are at least a hundred people on here who have expierences of Railworks. I just need a bit of help. Would it be better if I downloaded Steam onto my computer now, so it is all ready for when the game arrives?
If so, what package do I download (I'm running Windows 7 on a Prescario laptop)

Also, with regards to graphics, will a laptop fare well with Railworks? Thanks for any help you can give me!

I would advise to have Steam sorted beforehand - AFAIK it is required in order to run RW (and it then deals with all updates and achievements and so on). You can download it from here I have it running on Windows 7 as its fine)

Personally I purchased it through Steam and had no major issues (apart from being on a very slow broadband link so it took a while!) in installation and I have rarely had problems with Steam either.

A laptop should be fine for running RW, although you may need to lower graphics settings a touch to prevent lag, but it all depends on the spec of the laptop. Mine doesn't have a dedicated graphics card so its all done by the main system processor/RAM, but with settings at a lower setting, it runs fine on the whole - with high settings it works but is very laggy.

The only cause of problem has been the WCML North route which crashes on me, but I have a feeling that is because it maxes out my memory.

Select Rail Simulator and let it do it's thing. Now, I know RS is now obsolete but if that comes out ok, it's somewhere to start even if you have to turn down settings in Railworks.

What would be better is if you posted more details about your laptop, if it is an integrated graphics then you have an issue, it most likely won't work.

As for Steam, it's fine, it cannot be that bad if there are millions of daily active users! As a platform for Railworks distribution, I favour it, it allows the developers to provide an easy way of updating the core files as well as a smooth way to add extra purchases to the sim.

I have a Compaq Laptop with Windows 7 64-Bit. It has everything I need except for the Mobility Radeon 9800 (I have 9200). Do you think I will be OK?

The reason I haven't checked it out using your link yet as I am typing this from another PC (though I will when I get home).
I have never had an problems with games on my laptop before. It eats UK Truck Simulator and Assasins Creed for breakfast!

My laptop is integrated graphics and I don't have too many issues - its certainly very much playable

Hope you enjoy Railworks its a good game, there are plenty of add-ons for it but most of them do cost and theres not many freebies.
