Railways in Hungary

I have just completed a succesful visit to Hungary spending some time in Budapest. There have been a number of posts in recent moths about railway photography and I am pleased to report no problems were encountered. I visited two of three terminus stations and was pleased to see many loco hauled trains and plenty of shunting with stations pilots still very busy.

I have posted the first gallery of images taken yesterday morning at Budapest-Nyugati just as the sun was coming up.

Nyugati and Keleti are great, Nyugati because it is an Eiffel design and has possibly the best McDonalds anywhere, Keleti for the statues of Watt & G.Stephenson on the front

I visited Keleti last summer. Its a truly majestic building, although spoiled somewhat at the time by a huge amount of building work being carried out in the area. Has this been finished now?

I rode from Budapest to Gyor and Sopron and again came down from Bratislava to Budapest. I will be adding two galleries from Budapest keleti station plus one each from Gyor and Sopron. Will be going back to do some more in Hungary. Its a brilliant system with relatively few multiple units. Plus of course there are ex-BR diesels and electrics at work with Floyd.

I have now posted a galley as promised from Keleti station in Budapest. This is a wonderful station with plenty of activity. There are three station pilots shunting almost continuously with two of them diesels introduced in the mid-1950s! Most trains are in the hands of class V43 Bo-Bo electrics many of which will soon celebrate their 50th birthday. Add to that you will see coaches from Hungary, GySEV, Austria, Railjet (Austria), Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and I think some others! Extra good news is that there are very few units and 10 minutes away by train you can see class 86 and class 56 from the UK in Floyd livery on freight!

Love the new piccys Lou thanks for posting them, what about Gyor and Sopron?. With a bit of luck I should do the tour with the Floyd 56 and 86 next month, I will try to post piccys if I can. I quite like the posh cafe/bar in the corner of Kileiti (I think) Not cheap but a lovely old building. Quite often there's an old boy playing chess underneath the arrivals
/departure boards. Both Kileti and Nugyati have a really good atmosphere I think

Yes, and don't forget the SBB cargo Re4/4s that work these trains between Lindau and Zürich
