Railway TV programes...

Folks,

l was wondering if anyone on the forum knew if there are currently any Railway programes on the box at the moment. I am interested mainly in locos and traction.

l can only watch so many repeats of the stuff you get on sky channels.........Trainspotting, Discover shed, Railway lives etc.........

Good programes but l now know every script in every episode ad:

There's Michael Portillo on at 6.30 every night at the moment (see here) - not sure if that's the kind of thing you're after.

Alternatively why not scan eBay for traction DVDs and vids, or try one of the video companies like Video 125.

Not loco or traction stuff, I'm afraid, but I always tend to look out for occasional repeats of The Tube on Sky3. I know I've caught it a few times recently early in the morning. Not mainline railways, but definitely a good programme. Watch also occasionally show repeats of Rail Cops (following various BTP officers).

Yes, I was looking at these not long ago - Lots of good footage of the ECML including people at Leeds complaining about the extortionate price of a cup of tea (40p) and lovely phase 1 CIG's at Eastbourne.

I would also recommend Old Dirty and Slow (bit of a hatchet job in places - the railway can hardly be blamed for terrorist explosions and suicides, and it was going through a major upgrade at the time) but lots of beautiful slammer footage.

Do you remember the HST power car that they named after it? It was 43108and had a horrible cheap-looking metal nameplate that they kept on for about a month after the programme had aired.

Type 'evercreech junction' into YouTube - that brings up plenty to look at including Sir John Betjemans excellent BBC films from the early 60s.

Morning? Assume that was a video
The program was aired live in the afternoon just as the Inverness - Kings Cross was passing through York
I managed to watch four of the five programs, only recently I managed to catch the one I had missed

Must have been a video. As it was on in the afternoon, I would have been at school when it was broadcast, so I must have watched the previous days episode the next morning.

I have very distinct memories of it, from the weird guy in the signal box with a funny eyebrow talking to the reporter, somebody driving a HST and saying, "we're now winding her up", a fat woman train driver taking a train to Eastbourne and noting that they will sometimes stop at Plumpton if there is a meeting on, Rob Curling reading a report of a train driver being fined for being clocked by a speed detector and speeding, and the little wag remarking "he should be given a f***ing medal". Great stuff.

It was broadcast from 13th Feb 1989 to 17th Feb 1989 and some episodes are on youtube.

My mum and dad taped all the Railwatch editions so I could watch it after coming home from school - unfortunately they taped over each one, so the only ones I was left with was the Friday one and the "review of the week" that they did. The tapes are long lost now, though

The BBC archive has several, things like Michael Palin - Confessions Of A Trainspotter, Flying Scotsman in 1968 and a few more. I am hoping they will put all episodes of Railwatch on there at some point.
