Railway signs...

Not sure this is the best forum for this BUT....

When I was a teenager, I went on a school trip to York by train (well, to Scarborough via York) and would stake my life that on approach to York Station there was a billboard with a Yorkie bar on it with the -ie bit "bitten" off to make it read "York". The billboard as a whole read "Welcome to YORK, where the chocolate's chunky and the men are hunky".

Does ANYONE remember this? No one believes me when I tell them about it! I'm 41 now and this will have been the days when Yorkie was a Rowntree product made in York.

And this leads me onto the wider question of:

What are the best billboards/signs you've seen on approach into stations?

For me nothing has ever topped the Yorkie one but there must be some other good ones out there...?

York’s Chocolate Story is leading the celebrations by placing the famous Yorkie sign in King's Square during the half term holiday from February 13 to 21.

Until the early nineties, trains arriving at the city's railway station would pass a billboard which read "Welcome to YORK(IE) – Where the Men are Hunky and the Chocolate’s Chunky."

A spokesman for the attraction said: "I used to look out for the Yorkie sign from the train. When I saw it, I knew I was home.

"When we reached out to find out more on social media we were inundated with comments from people who were keen to share their fond memories of the sign."

The sign will be 9ft wide and accompanied by Yorkie giveaways in the square.

Rowntree's factory was served off the Foss Islands branch by a trailing connection coming from York. There was also a loop and platform at Rowntree's Halt. The Foss Islands branch continued round the North and East of the city centre to sidings in the Foss Islands area of York, including a link to the Derwent Valley Light Railway.

It is now accessible on foot or by bike all the way from Rowntrees round to Osbaldwick on the DVLR.

In answer to the original question, yes I do remember the Yorkie sign! Used to pass it most days on the way to and from York station.
