Railway Shifts

Hi, Hope this is the right forum. My dad drives buses for arriva. It is shift work obviously. In his depot there is a system in which he can swap his duty with another worker via a "swap club". I'm just wondering whether there is such an option on the railways. Thanks

My father works for the Tube, and apparently (at his depot at least) they're called the "Mafia" - unofficial shift swaps. Some people love working nights, some days, some earlies, etc.

It all depends on the shift system, at our depot there is no shift swapping, simply down to the rostas.

We at SWT do shift swaps, there is always people wanting to swap lates for earlies but rarely the other way around!!

I don't know how regular it is on the GN but I used to regularly swap some of my lates for nights with another colleague as it mutually benefited both of us.

As our boss told us as long as 1.) You're not breaking hidden and 2.) Both shifts are covered then swapping is fine.

I think it does depend on the location though.

As far as I am aware as long as the trains get covered managment are not fussed about any swaps.

I spent 4 years on permanent nights.... I was the favourite person in the depot as everyone hated the 3am Zoo Express.

As a Driver at Virgin Trains, I can inform you there is a lot of shift swapping not only daily but also weekly. It helps each other enormously.

Plenty of shift swapping at Chiltern. You get people swapping individual shifts and drivers making permanent swap deals with each other so one can always be on AMs and one can always be on PMs.

Slight tangent, but still relevant; how are other TOCs for fiddles? ie, when you swap half a job or even an individual train with a driver from another depot (usually so one of you can go home early) because it is accepted as part of the culture at our place but I hear other companies wont allow it.

OK on XC dependent on who is the resource manager at the time. I have never had a problem although they are slowly getting whittled away

We can get away with it at TPE.....
