Railway scents

Does anyone the remember the odd smoking arrangement on the West coast after the "executive" refurbishment. 4 coaches were half smoking, half non but with no divide in the middle so effectively the whole coach stank. I always wondered why they didn't have 2 smoking 2 non.

It was even weirder than that; it was ¼ of each carriage smoking, but it was arranged ¼ non smoking / ¼ smoking / ½ non smoking.

I could never work out the sense or logic behind that.

I'm very happy the days of smoking on public transport are over. The top deck of buses were bad at the front where a grated heater was. Trains never had smoking when I first used them in the late 90s.

Coach B on the ECML used to be a smoking coach up until the early 2000's. I was a smoker at the time and travelled the ECML quite regularly. Coach B absolutely stank of cigarette smoke and was usually quite filthy as well, almost as if the cleaners refused to clean it up.
I still think the smoking ban was the best thing to ever happen as it made me stop.

Welldone on stopping. I never smoked but I know how hard it can be to stop. My brother stopped because of the pictures on the packets. I also know someone who smokes e-cigs instead now. But I still have family members who find it hard to quit despite wanting to.

I think smoking should be banned everywhere. It is an addictive drug, it costs alot in health and wellbeing, drains the NHS. It is litterally killing people including some non-smokers. The only reason why it hasn't been banned is the government is getting tax from it.
Most smokers want to stop.

I most of missed those carriages. I was only young with my family. I used trains in the Preston and Sheffield area mostly then.
