The Micro pub at Diss railway station "The Jolly Porter" had a couple of pints there on route to Lattitude Festival last year,some nice ales there.

Change is to was, unless someone has taken it on again it closed in Oct 16.

One of the best pubs for Kings X or St Pancras is through a tunnel/alley directly opposite the latter. It's an Irish pub that does great Thai food called The Dolphin.

Oh, that's a good tip. After spending nearly £5 for a pint in the Parcel Yard I've been looking a decent boozer near by......I'll give that a try.

Another good pub that does a decent pint and Thai food is the Thornbury Castle, a few minutes walk from Marylebone.

Either that, or the Mirror Bar in the Landmark if ya feeling flush!!! LOL!!!

...all of which tend to be too warm ( at the Bree Louise). Stick to the Euston Tap!

White Hart Lane Station - British Queen (To be demolished this year?)
Northumberland Park - The Park (Demolished about 7 years ago, now on the site of a THFC shop and some flats.
The old Elephant and Castle pub? I think it was demolished in the 60s - there is a replacement one now

The Station House Haslemere is now back open. Can't attest to the ale as I don't really drink it; but they are struggling a bit to make the lager taps work. Nice enough grub though; and rooms.

As an ale drinker, I can confirm it's been well kept each time I've been there, 3 pumps I think. Lots of tasteful railway decor, and some of the tables are set up like old compartment first class.
Bit of a shame the stairs direct from the station have been filled in though.

Does The Grand Hotel in Swansea count?

Do we know when? It seems to have been "coming soon" for a while I spend a lot of time at Doncaster and while there are a couple of decent ale houses within 5 minutes walk one on the station is always a good thing!

When we went past there on the Doncaster & Thorne Pub Crawl on Easter Monday, a lady was coming out of there so I asked, and she said about a week's time. This duly happened and it is now open - we'll be planning a forum visit later in the year!

What a fantastic thread! As somebody who loves a good pint of real ale and trains, combining the two is a great idea! I'll be making a list of all of these suggestions and try to tick off as many as possible

Does anyone know of a decent pub close to Plymouth station?

The Pennycomequick was the nearest but closed a few years ago. The site is now student accommodation. Nothing within a short distance of the railway station that I can think of.

Elsewhere at Hartlepool there is a small pub at the station called the "Rat Race", very popular with visiting football fans.

Cleethorpes has two real ale pubs by the station and a mile away by the miniature railway is the signal box pub, one of the smallest but welcoming pubs you can find.

Follow the seafront south from the town centre and it is opposite the Premier Inn.

Sorry to bump a thread, but have just tried the pub in the little wooden building to the side of Nottingham Midland.

Very good - definitely worth a visit when waiting for a train !

Beer Heroes - a bar/bottle shop with very limited opening. It doesn't sell real ale as far as I know - just keykeg and bottles..

My latest find when looking for somewhere to have a decent pint off the beaten track around Euston / Kings Cross is McGlynn's on Whidborne Street, just a couple of minutes from Euston Road.

Back in my uni days. Was always a fan of The Victoria in Beeston. Nice choicecho local ales and outdoor area backing onto the platform where there was a good variety of rolling stock.

Thanks for the tip-off - will check it out on Saturday when I plan to take advantage of travelling from Willington to Nottingham 'direct'. Haven't done that route since the early 1990s!

Reading: The Three Guineas (recently refurbished), usually 4-5 hand pumps on
Weston-Super-Mare: "Off the Rails" a little bar / waiting area on the main platform.
Didcot: The Prince of Wales, ok not on the station but directly across the road with views of stuff passing by.

Prince of wales is an awful pub !!! I’ve had to waddle to the bar for loo roll !!!

it is a far cry from the decent ale bar it was some years back.

Back in the day Jean’s home cooked meals were superb, and Dirk the Dutchman behind the bar was a character to say the least. Still does a decent breakfast, and the ale choice has improved in the last year, not just Greene King. Does a roaring trade during the morning peak, so much so that a ‘relief’ paper and coffee shop also operates on the platform.

I'll second that. And loads of craft beer and gin too. They also sell a beer raising funds for the 4Sub association and their rail restoration efforts - bottle conditioned real rail ale.

Normal route is to come out of the station turn right and walk along the front of the building till you come to steps down into a subway under the station (formerly known as Wolverhampton High Level). You come out opposite the former Wolverhampton Low Level Station (building still there). Go to the right and you will find the pub. Good beer, good food and much railway memorabilia. On my list of things to do.

Indeed it does require a longer walk at the moment. The official walking route is thus: Head out the front of the station and towards the glass footbridge to the bus station. Immediately before the bridge, take the diverging path to the left and then immediately right to go under the footbridge. Walk along the ring road to the next junction, and turn right under the railway. Once under the railway turn right again and walk alongside the arches, past the Premier Inn and the Low Level station, to the pub...

Unofficially, and at your own risk, there is a quicker route. Once outside the station take an immediate left into the car park/drop off area. Once past the car park, there's a narrow curving road to your left which leads under the railway. Once under, the pub is on your right. This is not signposted as the official walking route as the road is narrow and there is no pavement under the bridge. It's much quicker, but keep your wits about you!
