The opening of the Severn Barrage between Barry and Weston super Mud, and capable of generating mega Megawatts, makes the new Nuclear power station at Hinckley point almost redundant.

Cardiff docks enters a renaissance with container traffic surpassing that of Felixstowe.

The opening ceremony is led ba a FGW Class 142 borrowed off the Cornish branch lines.

Cornwall declares independence becoming known as Kernow.

Scientists will discover the key to man's seventh sense which enables thought transfer to anywhere you wish. Government thought police however bans the practice due to misuse and a meltdown in public finances.

2015: a combination of hot weather, delayed trains and an above-inflation fare increase causes a passenger mutiny on GA's services, resulting in staff members being violently assaulted and trains set alight by angry mobs.

2020: any 142 still in service after 1 January 2020 will be attacked by angry passengers, and an army of railway enthusiast will come to the rescue. The offending 142 will be towed to a preserved railway.

2035: Hitachi's warranty-expiry chip activates in all IEP coaches, immediately disabling them from use. The mothballed Pacer Strategic Reserve is brought out of the Woodhead tunnels, to provide 12-coach 142+142+142+142+142+142 diagrams on the ECML, with a hasty £300m ERTMS retrofit.

The colour light green finally appears on the London Underground map (either for Wimbleware, or for the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line).

TfL run out of distinguishable trichromatic colours to use for lines, and so require all passengers to be tetrachromats in order to read the map.

2022: The economy collapses following policies imposed by the UKIP minority government elected in 2020. In an emergency general election, the Neo-Marxist party wins a huge majority. Scotland is reintegrated into UK by military force. The railway passenger system is requisitioned, with little or no compensation to the former TOCs. The power supply companies are also requisitioned.

Railway electrification schemes are accelerated in order to ensure 80% electrification of the UK network by 2032. For those lines not to be electrified, the new standard diesel train is unveiled - Class 146, a bus-based design on 4 wheel chassis. An electric equivalent (Class 346) was considered but so far had been rejected as impracticable.

2033: Pam Ewing (Dallas) wakes from a very long dream and sees that the world was still the same as it was in 2013.

2050 : Enthusiasts everywhere are up in arms about the IEP replacement, complaining that the new train is too short, too expensive, not need since the love the original so much, and most importantly, seat-window alignment will (we presume) be rather hit-and-miss :D

Bombardier keep building 377 for various electrification schemes now on 377/30as the Dft keep forgetting to tell them that they dont have to be compatible with existing Thameslink 377's as stop gap anymore.

Hitachi win the contract for new Gatwick Express trains but the drawings are swapped for drawings of the class 460. Hitachi build the trains which look exactly like a class 460 except they have sliding doors as hitachi dont understand the concept of plug doors and think it must be a mistake.

The daily mail then breaks the scandalous story that new trains have been built which look almost exactly like trains which were modified at considerable cost a few years earlier for use elsewhere.

This causes considerable embarresment for the Government and Hitachi are forced to apologise and build a load of IEP's free of charge.

Pacers replace Pendolinos on WCML services. Innovation from Virgin that allows one sandwich per train prevents them from working in multiple, so 2-car becomes standard.

Edinburgh - King's Cross is converted to light rail.

Multiple units replace freight locomotives, new freight journey times of two weeks are hailed as 'steady improvement'

2 of the 4tph to New Cross on the ELL are switched to the Crystal Palace branch to increase the capacity between New Cross Gate and Sydenham to 10tph. 378's go from 5 to 6 car.

GoVia are awarded the TSGN franchise. They sadly remove the NSE branding from the Northern City Line stations, however provide a late night and Sunday service for the first time going above the franchise commitment by terminating some services at Gordon Hill.

2030: Southeastern finally provide a late evening and Sunday service to Dartford via Denmark Hill, this after the DfT under Labour threatened to hand the metro side of the franchise to TfL. Kent fears are ignored as Labour have a majority.

Southeastern continue to provide 2tph on most Metro services during evenings and Sundays.

The Bromley North branch becomes part of a new Bromley Tramlink.

Okay, here goes...

An election in 2017 (after the Con-LD coalition implodes less than 2 years into their second term) sees a 'Traffic-light' coalition of Labour, the Greens and the few remaining Lib-Dems announce another raft of electrification schemes to follow on in CP6/7.

The 'IEP' trains begin to enter service on-budget(!) and just a few weeks later than planned, having had a few teething problems during testing. Virgin East Coast repaint a number of 91/Mk4 sets into 'heritage' liveries to promote a series of 'Farewell Tours' planned after a drunken meeting at the West Riding, Dewsbury between Sir Dickie Pickle and a group of RailUK Forum members doing the Pennine Ale Trail. 91001 (renumbered) gets 'Swallow' livery and it's matching name back; 91104 receives GNER colours but is named 'Ian Yeowart' after a dispute over the GNER brand; 91131 is given HST-style BR blue with 'Intercity 225' branding; and 91132 is given an improvised version of LNER green!
-The remainder however see out their days in EC silver, but with red Virgin swooshes at each end!

Hitachi win the contract to provide new stock for Merseyrail- with dual voltage provision for electrification (and joining where required) at 25kV OHLE of Ormskirk-Preston (including the south Burscough curve, which links into wiring of the Wigan-Southport line); Kirkby-Wigan (with passive provision for a Skelmersdale branch); Ellesmere Port-Helsby (and on to Runcorn, with Chester-Warrington also being wired); and Bidston to initially Shotton (High Level)- which sees a replication of the practice that's just being eliminated at Ormskirk & Kirkby!

A plan eventually emerges to upgrade some of the Pacers to meet the post-2020 accessibility requirements. The 3-car 144s are refurbished similar to the plans which emerged in early 2013. The remaining 2-car units (23x143, 13x144) are merged into 4-car sets with the removal of 2 of the cabs, and fitted with one accessible toilet per 4-car set. The 17 new 'super-pacers' are classified as 145/1 for the sets formed of 143s and /2 for the 144s. The remaining odd set of each become spares donors. In early 2023 the possibility of redundant bi-mode IEP engines means the poor folk of Altrincham, Colne, Clitheroe, Denby Dale, Gainsborough, Marple and Stockton may have to suffer their still-rather-poor-especially-after-all-that-investment screeching and bouncing for another decade!

And finally, Huddersfield eventually regains services to the capital thanks to the dreaded Bi-mode IEP, but not to Kings Cross via the ECML. How? A dramatic upsurge in reliability of the GW-800s coupled with a drop in passenger numbers due to some economic nonsense means that several of the bi-mode sets become spare. In a joint venture between the Northern and East Midlands franchise holders, 1 daily return service starts between Huddersfield-Shepley-Denby Dale-Penistone-Barnsley-Meadowhell-Sheffield-fast to St. Pancras! With a journey time in the ball-park of 4 hours or more (not helped by the 10mph speed restriction for heavy stock on Longroyd Bridge viaduct) it doesn't attract much end-to-end custom though!
