Hi folks.

Has anyone found this section of the railway pension website a lot of hard work ?

It asks for addresses of those you nominate but dates of birth also ?

"Cousin Doris, I need your date of birth so you might get money if I snuff it while I'm still working on the choo choo's"...... Rather awkward.

It even asks for a date of birth for a charity !!!

Anyone agree with my experience ?

If you don't give them details , how on earth would they know who to give the money to.

But to what depth should you need to go. How do wills manage to work then ?

By giving full name and address of the beneficiaries at the time of making the will. You will also give details such as my cousin or aunt and i have seen dates of birth given( but only in homemade wiils)

Often a tracing agent is needed to find the person due to the age of the will and that can be a massive long winded PITA

You're including Cousin Doris in your nomination but don't even send them a birthday card?

I don't send anyone a birthday card !!! The people I know are getting nought, I'd just like it to be a surprise to people who were good to me back in the day should I pop my clogs suddenly.

Wills are always a touchy subject. I have to say I don’t see why though - so many people seem to faff about over the subject, then if the worst unexpectedly happens they’re thrown in at the very deep end at the worst possible time.

Much better to be prepared - that’s certainly what I want for my family.

Worth noting that if cousin Doris is actually Anne Smith, and by the time the pension scheme comes to trace her 10 years hence is actually Anne Jones, and has lived at a different address for many years, it may not be an easy task to find her, even using a tracing service. Providing a date of birth immediately narrows down the search dramatically.

What happens if Doris is an often used family name and there are actually three Doris' with the same surname. Good luck if they all decide to claim they were the Doris that you meant to leave the money to. At least the lawyers will make some money! I'm not being sarcastic but this is a clear way to prevent arguments after you pass away and enables the correct recipient to be narrowed down...

If you nominate a minor the DOB is relevant, a trustee may be required for say a babe in arms.

As people have said, this is just about making sure that they give the money, should that need to happen, to the right person. The solicitor or executor dealing with your Will are likely to know to whom you are referring, as they are acting on your behalf in a personal capacity. The pension provider, however, is not and they therefore need to have it all as watertight as possible. There are many situations where multiple data items are used to verify identitiy - name, surname, DOB, sex (that one used to be so useful and easy...), NI number/pay number/passport number/similar. If you get hold of your great granny's first passport you'll see it includes height and eye colour!
