Just a quick question- does the railway scene still offer opportunities for internal workers with railway experience & knowledge to work their way up the internal career ladders?

I appreciate the railways are a different scene from what they once were.. is there a different preference nowadays?

Yes, there's nothing to prevent anyone from applying for a higher position and most companies welcome employees who want to better themselves.
