Railway Magazines

I buy Modern Railways regularly. It has the level of coverage I require and is published at the right time of the month. I quite often hold back from reading TLB (the London Omnibus Traction Society newsletter) for a week then buy Buses and Modern Railways together and have a trip out on the day I read them.

Rail is good but being published every 2 weeks, and occasionally on the "wrong" week when there is a 5-week month, deters me from buying it.

As our Library gets Railway Magazine I usually brouse through this too.

I read MODERN RAILWAYS

I like RAIL for covering wide variety of news very quickly with a couple of heritage features which I may/may not enjoy, I also skip over the Traction and fleet moves section. (have noticed that issue of the last line/paragraph of a story being cut off mentioned previously every couple of months though)

Modern Railways is more indepth and technical (slightly), its length means stuff that might be half a page or a spread in Rail tends to be covered in more detail sometimes as much as 6 pages but published monthly it can often be a couple of months after a story appears in Rail that Modern Railways covers it as 'news'.

I forget the name but theres a rather cheaply produced one with next to no picture that has pages and pages of paragraph news clippings rather than featured articles and I find it covers even stuff RAIL misses.

Tramways and Urban Transit focuses soley on trams and has good news round ups along with news snippets but being a localised international magazine its UK coverage is always quite brief so I usually skim it rather than buy it.

I have no interest in steam, modelling or illustrated mags.

I have just started taking MODERN RAILWAYS...and not just for the free maps

In the May edition, there are two excellant 6 page articles each on how rail will be moving forward in both the Greater Manchester and the Leeds area, plus a well written article on Lincoln and its rail connection problems.
