Hi all, I came across a master key for sale on ebay today, as well as various current issue lanyards for various TOCs. What is the legality of this? It doesn't seem right/safe to me that any old person can buy these sorts of items (or that people are allowed to sell them!)

Hopefully you have flagged up yoiur concerns with eBay at the least so they can delist them. Although lanyards would need a Id card with them, both they and keys should not be available for sale.
Can you ask how they were obtained and who is the owner of them?
Keys are seemingly constantly on there and they always sell. I'd guess to enthusiasts but nothings stopping anyone buying one and using it - as happened on EMT. What is issued remains company property but I guess it's impossible to control. One thing my depot goes through most beyond paper or printer ink is keys!

You can tell the newbies. Have a quick rethink about the number of keys and where they might be.
I'm not fully versed on the details but there was a security brief posted at my depot last year saying that an EMT unit, I forget where, was moved by a passenger who had accessed the cab and 'opened the desk' with their own key. They managed to get the brake off and roll the unit a good distance, much to the confusion of the driver who stopped it by pulling a door egress if I remember correctly. The persons intentions were to 'drive' the train but thankfully they failed and a safety system worked as intended to prevent power being taken!
