I was doing a newspaper search for Railway Inns and a result was an article dated 21st November 1829 reported in the London Evening Standard taken from the Plymouth Journal. In the article there is a reference to 'the Railway Inn on the Exeter-road' Was there any railway in Plymouth at that time?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received...
Cheers,
Jolly

There was a Railway Inn on Eldad Hill. It’s sort of in the triangle of Millbay,North Road and Devonport Kings Road stations.
It’s mentioned on the link below but no date is given.

As gg1 has just posted, there was the Plymouth and Dartmoor Tramway or Railway, opened 1823
(I had it down as the Lee Moor Tramway - which actually was a branch of it, so I've learnt something!)

and this 1850s map shows a Railway Inn exactly where it crosses Embankment Road

Solved, I think? (The South Devon Railway was 20-odd years later.)

I reckon that is just about where Embankment Road meets Embankment Lane and Gdynia Way.

Yes, it soon had a railway at its back door as well - the SDR Sutton Harbour Branch which is now Gdynia Way. Looks like it was destroyed in the Blitz (along with the nearby Western National bus depot).

There was a Railway Inn at the other end of the tramway in Princetown too, which terminated in its yard. This still exists, but sadly renamed 'Plume of Feathers'
