Not an answer but tangentially related, I worked on the signalling for the Thameslink core in the late 1980s.

There was a surprisingly large amount of time and effort spent in determining whether it would be St.Pauls or St Paul's. And then there wasn't because it became City.

I'd like to think that was why!
