A quick and dirty survey of the line on the OS map plus a measure on Google Earth does suggest that York (Skelton Junction) to a point about 1.5 miles north of Thirsk station beats other candidates handsomely, at about 22.75 miles. So I think @Peterthegreat takes the biscuit.

Pendant alert: There is a gentle curve at Pilmoor, a few miles South of Thirsk. Therefore the longest straight on the national network remains Barlby (just East of Selby) to Hessle (just West of Hull) at a fraction over 18 miles...on the Down line only. The Up line has an 'S' bend at Gilberdyke to allow a faster turnout onto the Google line. Purely as a matter of record and not relevant to the question!
I'll go into hibernation
Don't do that! We all make mistakes occasionally - I've made many myself - and you've come up with some interesting and challenging questions in the past. Hopefully you will continue to do so! ;)

Thank you.
Hopefully an easier one.
Where would you find Wilder Robert?
It is, I believe, the nickname of a secondary line somewhere in Germany -- don't recall where. Not to be confused with "Rasender Roland" -- the 750mm gauge on the island of Ruegen.

Since I used -- tantalisingly -- to know the answer to this one: have Googled it, and thus well-and-truly disqualified self. (Feel that I ought to have remembered; with my christian name being Robert -- though I like to consider myself fairly tame.)

Well as there are no offers I will declare open floor.
Wilder Robert is the name given to the narrow gauge Döllnitzbahn line south of Oschatz in Saxony.

@Peterthegreat: I'm tempted to be evil, and take a leaf out of this recent book of yours. Another 750mm gauge outfit -- this one closed very long-since. Local folk affectionately called it La Panderola. Where was it? (I won't let the torture go on, on this one, for anything like as long as you did :E .)

Istria? ....the formerly Italian occupied part of Croatia, but originally Austrian when its narrow gauge lines were built.
Afraid not. Possible small clue: the line concerned, was in a country where 750mm was the exception rather than the rule.
