I've posted a question before on "Railway General Knowledge" -- some years ago -- touching on the following topic; but anyway...

There is a state of the USA which once had -- in the fairly distant past -- a number of public lines on the (in those parts, literal) 2ft. gauge; which gauge was almost unknown on public railroads anywhere else in the US. Please identify the state concerned.

That didn't take long -- Maine indeed. Five lines in all (varying magnitudes): first opened 1879, last closed 1943. Some -- in my opinion, rather "far-fetched" -- preservation has happened. There's a splendid book on the subject -- The Maine Two-Footers by Linwood W. Moody.
