All I know is that Thor was wrecked at Bridgend, another hit Coton Hill South signal box at Shrewsbury, killing the signalman, and the last was somewhere near Wolverhampton on the Stour Valley Line. But the numbers I know not.

OK. The four locos were 1562 (Haughley Junction - 13th March 1971), D1734 (Coton Hill, Shrewsbury - 11th January 1965), D1671 "Thor" (Bridgend - 17th December 1965. Nameplates subsequently transferred to D1677), 1908 (Monmore Green - 8th April 1969).

Robert Stephenson's Rocket, built for the Rainhill Trials of 1829, used a number of innovative features in its design. Stephenson is often credited with inventing them. Who actually first developed the multi-tubular boiler and the blastpipe, the combination of which were key to Rocket's prizewinning performance?

Well, interestingly Hackworth's grandson (who wrote his biography) tried to credit him with inventing the blastpipe, but there is good evidence that the idea was tried earlier. And Hackworth certainly didn't invent the multi-tubular boiler. He was still using return-flue boilers into the 1840s for coal haulage locomotives.

Time for a clue? One of the two people involved invented also the first wire cable suspension bridge. The other became involved with an early project to tunnel under the Thames and nearly drowned when water broke in.

Brunel?

Not Brunel, although a much better known incident of near-drowning in a tunnel did happen to him. Brunel's near escape happened in 1828. The one we are talking about here was almost exactly twenty years earlier, and the tunnelling attempt was abandoned soon afterwards.
