In the era of the modernisation plan when a number of one-off prototype diesel locomotives took to the rails, which manufacturer completely ignored the appearance design brief when producing their example?

I wasn't aware of an appearance design brief but..............the Hymeks were never actually in the running for an order, the consortium that built them just designed and built them and offered them to B.R.

Incidentally there was more than one class 28 and more than one class 35 so it couldn't have been those anyway...

Now, there aren't an awful lot of one offs from that time so I won't be handing out any clues just yet... except that this was one of the higher profile examples.

Yes, when building D0260 Lion, BRCW ignored guidelines on the livery as well as the roof styling and a few other bits and pieces to do with the appearance.

I'll beg leave to take the next one. A "gauges"-type question -- a kind which I'm rather fond of.

Of the islands in the Mediterranean which have, or have had, public passenger railways: on which different gauges, have these pub. pass. railways run? (Indication of respective gauges / islands would be pleasing, but is not required.)

Hint: there were, "at peak", five different gauges involved -- four of them still active on various Med. islands today.

Crete No public services but several industrial lines(all now closed) with gauges of 1 metre, 900mm and 600mm
Malta -one passenger carrying line closed in 1931 -- metre gauge
Majorca- Still open passenger lines
Palma- Soller and the (excellent) Soller Tram line all 3 feet gauge ( I believe British built!)
The new Palma metro system is metre gauge

That's two islands and two gauges, out of those of which I was thinking -- question concerns public passenger railways (have no hatred of industrial lines, just not basically "my bag"). Four more islands and three more gauges to go !

Sicily- has the 950mm railway around Etna
I believe- a standard gauge system

Sardinia---950mm system

Cyprus had a 2feet 6 inches system which closed in 1951

(Sardinia, like Sicily, has a 1435mm gauge system as well as 950mm.)

Bit of definition here. Are you referring to "London" or the City of London?

I think arguably it may be Deptford although people often quote London Bridge. In the city it may well be Liverpool Street.

Deptford was the answer I was looking for.
It opened 8 Feb 1836 and trains ran to Spa Road (now closed)
London Bridge opened 14 December 1836 and Greenwich 24 December 1838.

The first (still operational) inside City of London was Fenchurch Street 2 August 1841

These are three good suggestions, and I don't know whether they are right; however, even if they are, it's not what I'm looking for.
