This is deeply intriguing! Some sort of long forgotten staff member?!

Or perhaps a person living inside the afore mentioned signal box?

To clarify; it involves an abandoned signal box within the tunnel? Or was that dismissed?!

Yes, although technically the box was just outside one part of the tunnel... I'm curious to see who gets the right answer - right now its a toss up between you and The Edge

Ghost of a signalman discussing something with ghosts of traincrew?

So the 'box was outside the tunnel, but the happening happened midway through the tunnel itself?

Was the 'box disused at this point?

Ghost of a signalman getting locked in the bog whilst taking a ghostly crap, resulting in ghostly minutes turning up at the delay attribution office?! :D

Lets have some sort of clue here.

We've got some sort ghostly apparition to with a signalbox.

The local Boy Scouts camping in the signalbox.

A bumbling Captain Mainwaring, mistakenly thinking the Eastgate platoon were using the ghostly signalbox as their command base for a mock battle exercise? They were in fact, of course, upstairs at the High Level.

Disused box fully lit and functional?

Ding, Ding, Ding - we have a winner... (Although, to be fair, The Edge almost had it too but lost on account of his wording).

Stobcross was closed along with the entire low level line for some time. A year and a bit later, a supervisor/foreman/inspector was sent to have a look at the condition of the place and noticed the box fully lit up. Upon going over and going inside, he noticed a signaller inside. It turns out that all of the other bobbies on the line had either taken retirement or moved on to other jobs - except this guy. Seems he had been forgotten about and, obey the last instructions he had been given, turned up to do his normal shift and kept the box working and operational, signed in the register when he came on and off duty, submitted the books for inspection and collected his pay as normal. Apparently, nobody had been any the wiser... The story goes that, when told by the supervisor/foreman/inspector to close the box, the signaller did so by sending the traditional box closing code, recorded the fact in the box's register and had the guy countersign it!

Have to say this has been a very good one for you to all try and guess - it was a close run thing at the end, but BestWestern just squeaked in based on wording - the floor is his

That is a fascinating tale! And a damned good question!

One from me then; at which station would one find a derelict feature known locally as 'The Worm', and what is or was its function and purpose?

Great Malvern. A tunnel to allow the young women of the college to get from the station to the school without being exposed to the common men folk of the town.

Yes! Well that was rather more brief :)

For a bonus point then, there was a second private passageway leading from the platform - what was that one for? :D
