North Sunderland Railway?

Was not 1952 rather than 1957 the final date of the closing of that railway?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
A branch line with one intermediate stop closed to all traffic in 1957, having never seen a through passenger or freight service from the mainline. Which branch was it, and what was the reason through trains were not allowed?

I will offer up the Holywell branch line. There was a 1 in 27 gradient in one line section.

We have a winner. Due to the gradient and risk of runaway onto the main line, all trains had to be worked with the engine at the lower end, and no through running was permitted.

(The branch closed to passengers in 1954 and freight in 1957. The one intermediate station was St Winifred's Well Halt.)

A notice affixed to the cab roof above the drivers side of a certain class (or two) of 4-6-2 steam locomotive, advises the crew that should a smell similar to that of garlic be noticed, it is an indication of what condition?
(This may also be applicable to other types of locomotives fitted with a similar device)

The Patricroft-based firm James Nasmyth & Company, which became Nasmyth & Wilson, exported a large number of locomotives back in the 19th Century.

I suspect these might have gone mainly to "The Empire" rather than the USA, but I'll throw their name in as a candidate.

Not Nasmyth I'm afraid.

Foster Rastrick? & Co- built the Stourbridge Lion the first steam loco to run in the US. I guess they didn't build many & 1 is in the NRM so are the rest (75%) all in the US?

Correct. Their first three locos were exported to the USA - Stourbridge Lion being the first. They then built Agenoria for the Shutt End Colliery and that was the end of their foray into steam locomotive construction.

I'll be fair, though, and wait a few days to see if anyone else gets it before I pounce.

Peter has already submitted the correct answer to me by a private message.
I am out all day tomorrow in the "big smoke" (translation=London) so I will leave it for him to shout correct in my absence if anyone else gets it. Should be back on the PC by about 2100hrs tomorrow night.
