Yes, of course you're right!

[Actually I phrased my question rather sloppily, as I was thinking of the time when certain express trains used to slip coaches at certain stations while the main train passed through without stopping. The guard of the slip portion would operate the lever to uncouple the coach[es] whilst in motion and bring the slipping portion to a safe stand in the platform, and after passengers had alighted, a shunt engine would couple up and take the coach[es]away. Hence, I said "in the days of yore"].

But guards in general are authorised to stop a train in an emergency, so the floor is now yours.

Sinfin closed in 1993, when trains were replaced by road transport, but the closure paperwork wasn't completed until 1998.

Correct, It was closed half a year after the farringdon to moorgate line.

I would have disqualified Farringdon- Moorgate because only 2 lines out of 4 were closed between these stations. It is still possible to travel by rail between Farringdon- Moorgate by Circle/Met trains on parallel tracks to the FCC tracks.

Consider if you will the two most "outer" stations on the District line, Upminster and Ealing Broadway. Based on their respective longitudinal positions alone (i.e. not considering how far north or south they are of each other or the actual distance between the two), which station is closest to the halfway point?

The halfway point is a short distance west of Bow Road. This means that you can *almost* go halfway on a straight east-west axis without going underground. (Unless the dive-under at Barking counts.)
