Sounds like Chester, in about 1969. Class 24 hauled freight pranged DMU, various other units and 24s damaged by the resulting fire. Not sure about the current evidence - lack of awnings/roof at Eastern end of Chester station??
The freight train in that occasion was the 0225 Birkehead to Etruria ore train of over 1000 tons and once it was established that it was out of control, it was diverted into the Chester diesel depot to avoid the passage of this train through the station area, where obviously damage to both buildings and rolling stock would have occurred.
However, in 1968 at Castlecary, Class 24 D5122 running light engine pased a signal at danger and ran into the rear of the 0846 Glasgow to Edinburgh 12car DMU (made up of two x 6 car Class 126 units)...so I will choose this one for my entry...but now realise I must be wrong as the locomotive was running LIGHT ENGINE and did not have a freight train attached.
