G'day everyone,

Up until the early 1980's (when I left Derby) there were two footbridges connecting the Locomotive Works to the other side of the railway station. Does anyone know when they were demolished and whether the station was closed whilst they were demolished? I'm also interested to know whether they were demolished at the same time.

Also, from what I remember there was also a footbridge at the southern end of the carriage and wagon works and on a recent visit back to Derby I cannot see any evidence that it still exists. So..... as above any ideas when it was demolished?

Any information would be gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

The one in the middle of the platforms was still in use when I visited the loco works in 1987. I'm pretty sure the other one was still there too.

Looking at a number of photos at http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/SK3635 there is visual evidence that they were there until the mid-1980s. Unfortunately - as far as your questions are concerned - there are very few pictures between 1985 and the turn of the century which might have shown these bridges. I do note there were major works to the station in 1985, but edwin_m's visit in 1987 would rule that out. I suspect they were removed piecemeal with only part of the station being closed as each chunk was taken away - or possibly over a weekend possession?

This picture shows the bridge at the south end of the station (click on the picture to go to the larger original):
