Does anyone know of any companies apart from network rail that offer and apprentiship scheme or a railway engering course for school leavers.

Most definitely. You'll just need to find out whether a particular TOC does its own maintenance, or if it's all out on contract (ie apply to the contractor). Best of luck.

ScotRail take on apprentices. They were looking for some for their depots in Shields, Corkerhill, Inverness and Haymarket recently IIRC.
