Folks,
Thinking of asking the Mods to start up a new section in this forum.The divorced forum.The grief l get from the LawWomen because l spend about an hour on the forum per day is unreal,yet she cant even walk up a flight of stairs without reading Facebook.Honestly the Law women spends most of her day Facebooking it.

Anyone else in the same boat? This is an SOS

I must admit i spend more time here on uk railforums and wnxx than facebook. that said i know of some people who spend nearly 8-12 hours a day on facebook.

Facebook is just a reflection on how society now views matters of information dissemination.

It is akin to telephone boxes that, to the best of my knowledge, did not appear to have the need for external telephone communication in past days. as seems to be the case today, with the usage of mobile phones that now appear in many different guises.

The marketing sections of all these types of products have achieved untold financial benefits for their companies by brainwashing the population to believe these are indispensible, especially the very young members of society today, who will argue the case for their essential useage, ad nauseum..

Put it this way, the quality level of conversation on here is considerably higher than on Facebook. I generally only use the latter for seeing what other people are up to.

On a completely unrelated note, this is one of my real bugbears. The singular word for those of a female persuasion is woman, not women which is the plural.

Facebook was a bit of innocent fun when it began, but it is now causing a lot of problems. The only thing I use it for is locating people I haven't seen for years and sending them messages to see how they are. I can't understand those who update their status every few minutes with the thrilling news that they ar epopping down to the shop for some milk, or about to make some toast.

Though if anyone is interested I'm just about to bring the bins in...

Not at all. It has, in a way, become a victim of its own success. It has become too big, corporations and brands are everywhere, and there has long been instances of threats being made via Facebook, personal information being gathered, and new features being added which seem to invade privacy. Consequently, I am just a bit wary about using it a lot.

all of which are urban myths. facebook doesn't deliberately intrude on people's private lives because people aren't that stupid to post the gory details about their lives online. if people do post private details, that's hardly the fault of facebook.

with binge drinking, do you blame the drink or the drinker for the problems we have with binge drinking?

I suggest you actually do some research into the various privacy problems that Facebook has/had. You might change your mind now. It's all very well saying people should not post private information, but Facebook has a legal responsibility to secure data in many many countries.

We won't forget that it took Facebook two and a half weeks to fix an XSS hole!

Yes, which means they should be very very careful with data. Which they haven't been as you would be able to find out by researching the subject!

They are not urban myths, go and do some research as Ralph suggests. If you love Facebook that's fine. That is right. I find it useful, but in small amounts.

Start another thread if you want to talk about binge drinking. It's a hugely complex issue.

How has he a chip on his shoulder about facebook? He is just stating some facts. These people who use facebook as he describes are worryingly sad. They seem to think people are interested.
The site is rubbish, yet has blown out of all proportion because of the sad people that use it.
My cousin once wrote on it that she had found a pound coin down the back of the sofa. Oh wow. Ive seen others say thankyou to there mum for a lovely day. Eh, you say that when you leave them. Not later on, on facebook so that the whole world can see. People are using it just for the pure sake of it.

I have to admit that I'm the only person I know of who's not on Facebook. I just don't get it and have absolutely no interest in conducting my friendships via the internet (although it seems to me that a lot of Facebook involves "friends" that the person has never actually met, and indeed will never meet).

Saying that, I appreciate that plenty of people do use it in a more measured way and get a lot out of it, I just can't see myself ever wanting/needing to.

Yes I can completely see that - what you describe is what I meant when I was referring to people getting a lot out of it. I can see that it's really useful to be able to easily communicate with friends and loved ones and feel that you are properly connecting with people who may be far away.

That gets right on my tits too. My female relatives are the worst for it. To them, Facebook is like a soap opera. In fact, I've heard of some pretty nasty rifts based on silly little Facebook status updates! That much is absolutely pathetic.

That is so true - a woman at work had the massive hump lasting about 2 weeks because a colleague had put some photos up of a party and she hadn't been invited. A colleague ffs!!

I must admit I just don't understand the hold Facebook appears to have on people. Especially the younger generation. It's an obsession to them.
As someone who has never been on Facebook I just don't get it at all. "Oh but I can keep in contact with friends far away" people say. I always thought you could do that by email !!
Walk behind a youngster on exiting a cinema and see what they do. Almost immediately they get the phone out and on to Facebook !
Remember the conundrum, If a tree falls over in the forest and no one is there to see it, does it make a noise ? Well I said to my Facebook obsessed stepson If something happens and you don't put it on Facebook did it really happen ?

And another thing while I am at it is the way all girls seem to pose for the camera these days. I believe its even called the Facebook pose. Pouting head to one side with a finger to the lips. Sheeesh

I'm logged in most of the time at work (we have a very lax internet policy as our workload depends on the public/weather/events), mainly so I can chat to a certain lady... My main social network is Livejournal, which has much clearer privacy settings and is much more intelligent.

Of course I do use other networks like Twitter, Last.FM, Fetlife (NSFW), Flickr and Youtube for other groups...
