[Aussie_Rail]

Hello to everyone,

I'm probably the most active member here from the Australiasia and the South Pacific and so some time last year I was sent one of the forums 'Rail UK' pin. So I've tried to get a picture of it with the biggest symbol of Australia. So here it is.

Sydney, Australia.​

The widest bridge in the world has not only 6 lanes, a bike/walking path but two railway lines on it as well.

Indeed. The Sydney bridge doesnt even have a full arch - it stops before the concrete!!

The Tyne bridge does look nice, but probably no where near as big? Unless anyone has seen both bridges?

I couldn't help noticing that everyone who said the Tyne bridge was better had either 'Newcastle' or 'The Toon' as their location, which explains a lot.

Unfortunately I've only seen the one in the UK, but it is smaller than the Harbour Bridge. I have seen the Hells Gate Bridge in New York which is also very similar to both. One thing is for sure, they don't build them the way they used to.

Its not as wide as the Harbour bridge ill give you that. But its far nicer

Exactly where i thought it was taken from. Was about to ask that before i saw your answer. Got a picture very similar to yours myself. Albeit without any badges!!
Yes the Sydney Harbour Bridge is definitely larger than the Tyne Bridge. Also, i think without a doubt, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the most impressive, and nicest looking. The fact it isnt a full 180 degree arch makes it look a lot nicer.
You dont need to feel bad about liking the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was designed and i think also built, by the British. Doesnt it also use British Steel?
The views from the very top of it are amazing as well. Especially with the sun setting over the city.

Yes, it was built by the British. The same company also built the Zambezi Bridge at the Victoria falls, and my great grandfather was a very senior bloke at that company and he actually went out to africa to supervise the construction.

No way its better then the tyne though - the tyne is beautiful and full arch is always better and it has a lift

OT slightly but i was underwhelmed by Sydney - Just another big city with a few beaches - the opera house looks a mess and nothing like it does on postcards though the big old bank is very impressive.. Excellent train and ferry links though so i guess its not all bad

But, back to the topic, it was an excellent picture next to the Tyne, err, Sydney Harbour bridge!

A lot of people have said that about Sydney, but usually the reasoning is because its apparently full of Chinese and Japanese etc. Something i disagree with.
To me though it has more than most other cities. The harbour, the impressive structures (im including the Opera House in that, as i think its a lovely building), the skyline of the city when out on the harbour, esp when on the nice ferry trip over to Manly. A very pleasant suburb, and the ferry terminal does a very nice White Hot chocolate!!!, the walk around the harbour between the Opera House and Mrs Macquaries seat, including the lovely little park area that you walk past.
The walks around the southern clifftop at the entrance to the harbour. Darling Harbour, oh, and not fogetting the sight and sound of a VP185 powered HST!!

Im agreeing with 90019 again here. The Golden Gate bridge is nothing spectacular. It stands out because it is painted red, but really its just a normal suspension bridge. The bridge over to Oakland is more impressive.

The greatest bridge of all time is without doubt the Forth Bridge. No arguments possible im afraid.
Oh, and dont anyone call it the Forth R**l Bridge. Thats not its name.

Exactly. Everyone knows it's called the Forth Rail Bridge
