It's me again :D
Just one journey left to sort out. Oswiecim -> Wroclaw on Thursday 4th May. I'm thinking of taking the 0846 Oswiecim -> Katowice 0938 followed by 1010 Katowice - Wroclaw 1226. Do I have to split at Katowice or can I buy a (cheap) through ticket? If this goes well, I might be back in July or August.

Thanks :)

You CAN buy in 1 go, but it will be issued as 2 tickets-for PKP-IC and PR (now named PolRegio). Tix for PKP are now all reserved and for a specicif train (can sometimes be exchanged by just payiong a new Reservetion, depends on type of ticket). Senior discount is only on full fare-these advance's are often even cheaper.
Kat-Wroc: Its likely even just half and as fast by polskibus.com. (a shoot-off of Megabus).
PKP does not have many rover-type tickets anymore, only for the whole weekend.
PR has a lot, and these cost roughly about 20-25 PLN/day, like for whole weekend (turyst bilet-45) or 3 days in 2 monthes-RegioRailpass-75 PLN.
You can use most, but not all local other companeis on them too. Its site now has good info on english on them. There may even be a slightly cheaper all-summerticket for PR-for very slow line bashers.

I'm off next week. I've got almost all the trips and hotels sorted, thanks to everyone on here.

Hope you have a great trip. I probably said this already but Wroclaw is a lovely little city and the airport is really quite nice if that is where you are flying back from.

Thanks for the info - and the rest of your post - it came in handy :)

Cheers mate! I've got a whole day (and half a day before my flight) to spend in Wroclaw. Still undecided about what to prioritise, but I'll figure it out.

Bought a ticket for the 0635 Katowice - Auschwitz 0726 tomorrow (Wed) morning just an hour or two ago. Impressed by the clerk's English skills, but I thought I'd misheard/she'd made a mistake when she stated the price. 'Twas the princely sum of 6 Zloty (£1.20) Unbelievable. I'm definitely coming back sometime to explore more of the country.

Wroclaw is just quite nice to wander around. It is worth getting the lift up to the top of the Cathedral tower. It is not that massive a place so easy ish to see in a day. It is hard to believe the place got flattened in WW2. Most of the old buildings have been rebuilt in the original style but it doesn't look like Disneyland.

If you head back to Poland then I can recommend Warsaw and also Gdansk and Sopot which are next door to each other. Never had time to get to Gdynia which is also right next to Gdansk and Sopot.

Warsaw has quite an interesting railway museum which is easy to get to on the tram and also an army museum by the river which has loads of Warsaw Pact era aircraft and stuff just sat on the grass outside. The Railway museum has line after line of steam, diesel and electric locos just lined up outside the old station. It isn't quite as polished as the NRM.

The public transport costs buttons as you already know. I Gdansk I got a day ticket that covered 6 of us for the entire Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia region on all busses, trams, trolleybusses and local trains for about the cost of a days Saveaway on Merseyside for one person.

I had my first experience of Poland last October and loved it. We had 3 days in Krakow and 3 days in Wroclaw, and with my missis being ill for alot of it and not wanting to do too much, I managed to do quite a bit of exploring.

Wroclaw is a great little city with plenty to see, and it's pretty much all within walking distance from the main square, or if you're not feeling quite so energetic, very easy to use the trams.

If you want to get around Wroclaw on the cheap you can get a 24 hour local transport ticket from the tram stops for 11zl (£2.20) or 20zl for 48 hours. It's also valid on the suburban trains out as far as the trams go, however, you need to validate the ticket on a tram before you can use it on a train. I didn't do this so when I got the train out to Brochow (large loco depot and freight yard) it cost me another 4zl (£0.80). On the way back the train was so crowded the 2 guards couldn't get through anyway so I wasn't too bothered that I'd had to pay an extra 80p!

Wroclaw Brochow is the place to go if you want to see some Polish locos. You have to get there by train from Wroclaw Glowny but it takes less than 10 minutes. An hour or 2 should be enough to do a thorough walk around the depot, maybe longer if it's good weather and you want to hang around for some passing freight.

The station is very small and an absolute dive! Local trains and ICs pass through the 2 platforms and there are 9 freight lines in a holding yard between the station and the depot. You can just walk off the north end of the plaforms and across the tracks to get to the depot and main yard, they're not visible from the station but there's plenty of routes through the trees and nobody seemed bothered with me walking around taking photos. Once you're across the tracks it's a 5 mintue walk to the depot. Just look on Google Earth or maps etc, it's pretty easy to work out.

I went down there twice on my 3 days there, both times I got about 50 locos around the depot, some of which are withdrawn. On the 2nd visit I even managed a walk right through the main shed, another 10 or 12 locos inside here too.

On the whole I found Poland very welcoming, the people were great, the food was lovely, and even better, nobody seemed bothered at all when you just wander off station platforms or into depots with a camera and start snapping away (obviously with a high viz vest).

A last recommendation. If you've had enough of the local cuisine and live music is your thing, opposite the medieval town hall on Wroclaw square there's a restaurant called Whiskey in the Jar. It looks like an imitation Hard Rock Cafe, but the food is really good and there was a fantastic band playing in there. I think the whole night including copious amounts of food & beer cost less than £25.

Enjoy your trip, I'll be back over there as soon as I can.
