Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a Royal Scotsman style tours - ie where you sleep in sidings etc a night? I've been on the London-Edinburgh sleeper service once and it was a great experience, but not good for a light sleeper like myself. Sadly the RS itself is a *little* beyond my budget.

Either UK or northern Europe.

Thanks for reading!

The only thing that comes to mind is the Berlin Night Express, an unusual, but non -luxury privately run night train service that runs on certain dates throughout the summer.
I can't find the full timetable with non - public stops right now, but it runs from Malmo to Berlin. The northbound run leaves early evening and runs north to the Baltic Sea coast. From memory it sits there for a few hours awaiting the ferry(not so sure if the Southbound run does this too), it is then shunted onto the ferry for a for a 4 hour crossing of the Baltic Sea, before the relatively short run to Malmo.

So whilst it doesn't exactly park up for the night, it's quite an adventure and it does spend most of the journey time stationary.

Though you made it clear that you don't want to sleep on a moving train, it's not clear to me exactly which aspects of night train travel you do wish to incorporate.
If you simply want to sleep in a sleeper train coach there are plenty of places all over Europe offering accommodation in decomissioned static coaches. Would that be of interest to you?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions - very kind of you to take the time and I will investigate them.

I should have explained more what I'd love to be able to do is see a lot of different places, but without having to check into different hotels etc. So, a bit like a cruise/motorhome journey but on a train.
